This problem sucks. It sounds like the scanner has actually gone bad. This can be a couple of things. The actual ccd unit inside the scanner, a position sensor, a motor or a wire harness.
The latter two are fairly unlikely, the first two more likely. Most probable is the CCD unit. I don't think Canon sells it as a separate piece, but it comes inside a replacement scanner assembly. These complete scanner units are expensive. You'll have to check with your local Canon shop to see what they cost.
Yes! No WIA, no scanning! It means Windows Image Aquisition is not turned on... Not only will the scanner not work but also other Imaging devices like cameras. The best way to find out will be to try and scan from Microsoft Paint. Go to Start, all programs, accessories then look for paint. When paint opens, click file then from scanners or cameras. Try to scan, if it scans then WIA is ok. It means is the scanner software that was not installed correctly so uninstall reinstall just the scanner software! If Paint does not scan, then its your computer's Operating system (winxp) at fault. Make sure WIA is started, or better try to restart that service (in control panel, administrative tools, services, look for Windows Image Aquisition, restart the service).
Open the top cover to the scanner, the lock switch is on the left hand side of the glass. It is about 1 1/2 inches oblong and SLIDES back and forth. The switch is black with 3 lines across it. Are you able to see it now? And your answer is ????
