I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your Motorguide Varimax Great White trolling motor. Here is a diagram of the upper control housing for the 2009 model that may be helpful:

1. Control housing assembly
2. Tilt tube assembly
3. Steering shaft assembly
4. Tension spring
5. Speed control knob
6. Directional indicator
7. Steering handle assembly

Regarding the issue with the motor only running in reverse, it is possible that there is a problem with the control housing assembly or the wiring connections to the motor. i think its time to strip this motor out,, it sounds like its has a short in the field coil winding,,as its pulling far to many amps,,,,

the black wire goes to - and the red goes to + for 12 volts. If you want 24 volts you need to add another battery and run a jumper wire from the - of the first battery to the + of the second battery and hook the white wire to the - of the second battery. Here is a picture to help you.

The white wire is the ground. The black wire is neg. and the red wire is pos.
