To do a system recovery without recovery disks (not all machines can perform this without recovery disks) press the power button and immediately keep tapping the F10 button until you enter the recovery console.

If unsuccessful, you will need to boot using the recovery disks that came with the machine.

  1. Place the first disk in the 1st CD tray (some machines may have multiple CD/DVD drives) and start up.
  2. Start the machine and immediately press ESC button to enter BIOS
  3. Select the drive the recovery CD is in
  4. Press Enter
  5. Once the machine boots off the recovery disk it will provide several options
  6. Press R for a standard recovery
  7. Press F for a "destructive" recovery (will wipe out and format hard drive)
  8. Press Q to quit
Once you've made your selection, the recovery process will automatically proceed. It may ask for additional recovery disks which have more software.

NOTE: if you are currently able to boot into the machine prior to recovery you should go in and back up any pertinent files. Both recovery options will wipe out personal files.

A link to this information has been provided below. Best of luck.

I have a hp Pavillion dv800 with AMD microprocessor. i installed windows 7 and it was working OK but then some of the drivers were not so I formated the hard drive and tried a restore with the original...

Pull the hard drive, remove the battery AND the BIOS battery. Let it sit for 300 seconds. Then replace the BIOS battery and the main battery, but NOT the hard drive, then go into BIOS SETUP, and choose the default settings. Then boot to a bootable CD (such as Hiren's BootCD 15.2, or Parted Magic). Then set the boot options to NOT BOOT to the hard drive. Then reinstall the hard drive, and boot to your Windows installation CD, and reinstall the OS of your choice.

HP Pavillion dv9000. Intermittent stops. Cannot restart, but will do so after many hours. Screen turns blue with band of torn blue that looks like shutters. System carries out repair check - once worked...

Try booting your computer in safe mode... when your machine starts press F8 and go to Windows. Run for a couple of hours and see if this problem happens.

If you have system restore running, restore back to a point when you didnt have the problem

I don't know the model of internal hard drive for my HP pavillion dv9420us. My system crashed and we have been unable to restore it after performing all HP suggested tests, etc.

Take the computer to any local computer store.
They can remove the disk-drive, identify it, either as "IDE" or "Serial ATA", and sell you a replacement (which need not match the manufacturer or model or size of the original), and will connect it.

Then, you will need to reinstall Windows.

HP Pavillion Programs freezing

Suggest restoring the system to factory settings. You will lose all of your data so back it up first.

Restore is either on disks or on recovery partition of hard drive. If you have recovery disks put first one in and reboot computer.

When the computer starts you should see an option to hit F10 for System Restore/Recovery. Hit F10, click advanced settings and choose Destructive Restore. Follow the prompts.

Will need to reload all programs after restore is done that did not come with computer such as Office.

Hope this helps.
Thanks!
