Turn off recorder. Hold the on/off button on the dvd player for a few seconds. until "CHILD LOCK" disappears. To over ride the child lock you need to reset the recorder to factory settings. You can look on the link below click on operating instructions. than go to page 82
There are no default password to unlock the parental lock. If you've forgotten the password, it is required to perform the Easy Setup to reset the settings on the DVD Recorder. Please refer to page # 83 of the Recorder's manual to reset the Settings.

sounds like your laser is getting weak. repair is usually not economical. laser is about 90% the cost of the unit. hope this helps if it still plays but not record. keep it as strictly playback unit.
