I have a GR-D71, digital video camera. It no longer records video, does however record sound, just no images. The screen LCD or viewfinder both have a black background when recording and also on playback.

Sounds as though the imager may have failed but make sure you are in video postion instead of memory mode. Little switch behind the lcd screen. Larry's Electronics
OK, it is known problem of CCD Imager chip failure in JVC GR-D33 camcorder and ccd imager will be replaced to get live view for recording, lens cap message will disappear as well. JVC will repair your camcorder free of cost for same problem, click JVC CCD Imager Support for details. Thanks.
OK, that means you can see clear picture in playback of old recorded tapes and camcorder just wont give you live view to record any more. sounds like some REALLY outdated compression... have you checked to make sure it's recording in the highest quality possible? Usually you can change settings like these in the camera's menu. If so then I'm a little stumped and wouldn't think any camera would continue functioning at all if it's encoding hardware were failing....
the ccd image sensor of your camera is the
problem...i know it is free for replacing that sensor..that trouble is
also in sony,canon,samsung and the other cameras brand cause the
manufacturer of their sensor is only one company that why they recall
it from the batch of 2002 to 2004..log on to the jvc costumer care to
see all the detail...
Defective ccd imager!! company will replace this ccd imager free of charge. Year 2002 up to 2005 released unit has a factry defect ccd imager. the company recalled these unit and replaced with a stronger version of ccd imager( they are still doing it). check it out.
