I want to transfer files from an old desktop running Windows 98SE to a new laptop running Windows Vista Home Basic. I have bought a Maxell 2Gb memory stick: gone to the Maxell eu site and downloaded - as needed, it says, a driver onto the old desktop. No luck - E-drive not accessible, says the error message. The download is a zip file, which seems to unzip OK and gives an install process, which doesn't seem to operate. Any step by step procedure that can be suggested would be welcome. [email protected]

Hello

If there is a driver file in the Zip file you downloaded, just manually install the driver. Go to device manager, the flash drive should have a exclamation mark next to it. Then right click on it and go to properties. Update driver software and select the driver file in the zip file. If this does not work, i would suggest that you set up a network via Ethernet cable between the 2 machines.

Best regards
Andrea

It should be unzipped and path to the unzipped folder provided while installing new hardware, when Windows (after plugging in the stick) finds a new plug&play device and asks for the location of drivers.

Also, go to your newer computer and check the USB stick's drive properties - it should be formatted using the FAT or FAT32 file system. If it's formatted using NTFS, Windows 98SE will not see it.

Good luck!

I bought a new laptop from Dell. My old on is a desktop from Dell. I have a Belkin transfer cable. It is asking for a transfer key number. what is that????????

Please note that your cable will support below givne O/S check at your end.

One destination PC running Windows 7 (32- or 64-bit) and available USB port

One source PC running Windows® XP (32- or 64-bit) or Windows Vista® (32- or 64-bit) and available USB port

For Example two Pcs 1 is Xp and other pcs is Windows 7, then try to connect between both .

Another one more option is there for transfering the data between two systems either laptop or Desktop by a cross cable (LAN CABLE), buy a cross cable from shop and insert into RJ45 Socket (i.e lan socket) the try to transfer the datas.

Transfer operating system to new hard drive

You can't transfer an operating system to a new hard drive, you must install it. When you install an operating system, it makes specific files depending on all of your hardware, including your hard drive. Your restore disks should be fine to reinstall Windows on your new hard drive. Just use a backup program to backup all of the data you want to keep since it won't be there on your new drive. Good luck.

Almost certainly you need to update your driver although I thought Vista already had this driver. Anyway try downloading Vista Printer driver from link and reinstalling your printer.

You cant transfer files from your old computer with Win 95 Using windows easy transfer which is a file transfer software in vista . If you want to transfer files then you have to copy them on a cd or dvd then paste them to your new computer . It will take a lot of time . Call a computer expert and tell him that you want to transfer the file from your old computer . He will do that easily .

Copy files from old computer and transfer to new computer

Although Vista comes with an Easy File Transfer Wizard it is not compatible with Windows 98.

You will need a CD burning program such as Nero Burning Suite or Creative CD Writer or here is a link to a FREE one.
