Hi, I stripped the printer down ;-) found a micro switch which i would have thought was the problem, however its not, Just ended up buying a second hand R300, must have printed over 10,000 CD with this printer, so no worrys about spending £25 for another one.

Have you contacted Epson directly? I had a problem with the R200 some time ago and it was down to the tracking of the CD/DVD tray being out of alignment. Due to cost of the printers now it is not worth paying to get them fixed. Lookout for Epson deals where you can trade in your old R300 for a newer model. I still have my R200 still going strong and an RX858.I am sorry I have no firm advice to fix it direct.Mac#
When you flip the main cover up, and flip the CD/DVD tray down, look at the cartridge color guide label (the colored dots). See the LIGHT CYAN dot? Directly across from that dot around underneath the gray cover is supposed to be a little plastic fin. That fin pushes the sensor switch in the CD/DVD tray to let the printer know if it is open or closed. If it breaks off, then the printer always thinks the tray is open. If it's broken off, you will have to either stick a toothpick or something into the switch, or glue a new thin piece of plastic in its place.
Is there a button for to close the CD/DVD guide? Your Printer stays on CD/DVD printing mode, that's why
Use it. IF NOT Reset the all settings, Check for your userguide Troubleshooting.
Check epson support page for helfull links.
The cd/dvd tray door has a small opening on right edge. Inside there is a slide switch. Use a toothpick to see if it is stuck. Check where it closes to the main body. A thin strip protrudes out to mate and close the plastic actuator of the switch. The door may not be closing well enough the actuate the switch. Make sure it is fully closed and retry to print. Also, there will be a small click as you raist the door before it snaps into place. If not, check to see if there may be some debris causing it to not actuate properly.
Good luck,
I had the same problem. Restarted the printer. Reinstalled the drivers. Scratched my head ... nothing! then I moved the printer away from the wall - problem solved! I can't say that this will work for you but if everything else is working, as it was and still is on mine then it's worth a try.
What I didn't realsie was that the cd tray comes out of the back of the printer when it's checking the alignment. I had inadvertantly pushed the printer back, too close to the wall. Moved it forward slightly and it's fixed.
Hope that solves it for everyone.
It sounds that there is a possible hardware failure concerning CD/DVD guide cover. We can try this to resolved that issue:
1. Turn off the printer.
2. Close & open the CD/DVD guide cover for three times and make sure that the CD/DVD tray is not inserted.
3. Close CD/DVD guide, Turn the printer on. If printer is ready, press the maintenance button.
4. Try printing again.
If the above step wont resolved that issue your printer may need to send to a nearest Epson Authorized Service Center.
The CD tray is removable and ensure the door is properly closed. If the error persists then shut the printer down Remove the software. Come off line Disable the Antivirus software Re install the software following the prompts Come back if that did not do it
If you had to push the tray up hard, it could just be that the sensor is now mis-aligned and not detecting the draw is closed.
You can check the voltages from the sensor to determine if the sensor is switching.
Get yourself a service manual for the printer (aaprox £3.50/ $7.00) to help you get to the sensor and test it's funtion.
