Put some Vaseline on the O-Ring to help it slide into place. Make sure it is properly inserted at the beginning.

If the filter is located inside the refrigerator:

1. Turn off the ice maker.
2. Push the eject button.
3. Pull the filter out of the housing.
4. Push the new filter into the housing until it clicks.
5. Turn on the ice maker.
6. Run 2 gallons of water through the water dispenser to purge air and residue.

A new filter can take several cycles of the ice maker to fill the filter up with water before. The average filter is around 30 oz and the average ice maker fill cycle is 3.2 oz. The new filter did not have any water in it. The water in the door has a resercoir so the air in the filter will still make the water work until you get air. Drain abour 3 tall glasses from the water in door. The ice maker should then work properly. The filter filters water for water in door (inside) and the ice maker so if you have water inside the door you should have ice UNLESS one of the inlet water valve solenoids has failed. Also make sure the Freezer door / light switch functions properly. The door switch is supposed to stop water and ice functions with the door open.

I would like to know if it starts making ice.

filter cracked because it froze . changing the filter is not enough change the housing . as the lines are frozen and wll brake . mm

The ice maker doesn't have a filter , the problem could be the ice maker itself that the tray ,which is made out of aluminum is losing particles.Look at the conditions of the ice maker tray ,if you see like white spots replace the ice maker.

Ice storage bin needs to be emptied and washed. Unsealed packages in the refrigerator and/or freezer compartments may be transmitting odors/tastes to the ice cubes.
Interior of the refrigerator may need cleaning.
Water chemicals. Installing an in-line filter can help with many odor/taste complaints.
An open box of baking soda in the refrigerator section can help with preventing the transmitting of food odors.
This is a common in-line water filter, they are fairly easy to install and usually come with instructions.


Even when your well or municipal water supply provides healthy, potable water to your ice maker, some impurities may remain. These can affect the smell or taste of the ice cubes, and therefore the beverages in which you serve them. I bought a brand new smartwater replacement filter and after a very short time, my water stopped coming through the door.. took out the new replacement filter and inserted a brand new one .. problem solved.. apparently some of the g.e. smartwater filter replacement cartridges don't have the high enough two plastic inserts which are attached to them at the top of the filter when you screw them on... if you have taken your cartridge in and out a few times, i think it wears down the plastic so it doesn't fit properly and won't put up whatever it is supposed to push up to make the water come through.. I personally think this is a g.e. problem with the replacement filters...

do you have water thru the door? you may have air in the line. filter incorrectly installed / or a bad water valve

First, are you getting water at the door? If not, the filter is installed wrong or there is some packing on the filter you didn't remove.
