The air purifier is blowing black soot.

Area where "fresh" air is being pulled in is dirty, filter needs replacement, heat exchanger is old, a seal is old/torn, or mold is shooting out!

I was burning candles, which apparently caused my units to carbon up and put soot on the walls _ I will never do that again!

Mine did the same thing. I'm currently taking it apart to clean it all out.

It is the excess toner brushed off the paper. Don't worry its completely normal.

One thing to be aware of is how these things work: they don't actually filter the air. Rather, they electrically charge dust/dirt/etc. particles in the air as they pass through. This new charge makes them attracted to walls, floors, objects, etc. So rather than straining or filtering dust from the air (like a more traditional air filter), they make dust more likely to stick to walls, surfaces, etc. so that you can then wipe them up.
If there is something in the room that is manufacturing air pollutants, it could cause the problem you're having. The most likely culprit is anything that makes smoke. For example: smoking (duh), or burning CANDLES (especially scented candles) or INCENSE.

There may be a leak. You might try shutting it down and taking a look inside. On the other end, there may be something wrong with your components inside. The compressor outside is to provide coolant. Inside, the fans actually cool the air. Make sure all doors are on the blower downstairs, and if all else fails, call a technician. Good luck!
