Yes it can be a number of things. It normally means data error. Then first thing you should do is delete the printed jobs within the driver. Turn the printer off then on and hopefully this would be it.. If it is try printing the same document again if the same error message appears then that document is corrupted.

If the problem doesn't go away then you turn the machine off remove the additional memory then turn back on. Then hopefully the error will not be there.

If still there then the printer formatter board firmware is corrupt and will need to be uploaded. This is a return to HP option though.

Hope the first one works
Thanks J

Paper jam is what prompts this error.
The 49.4C02 error usually follows a paper jam. When ever you close the primter door after clearing the jammed media from one area of the printer, the control panel immediately posts a 49.4C02 error. Often, you might power cycle the printer and it will hang at Checking Printer. For the 49 error to occur, additional media must still be stuck in the paper path.
Firmware version 5.005.3 contains a fix that allows the printer to recover and notify the user of the location of the additional jammed media in the paper path. if you are experiencing this issue, you should update to the newer firmware. This version of firmware also fixes the issue with the printer hanging in Checking Printer.

This is a Fix that has worked for us, so far:

To "deleted a suspect print job" is not really a fix as the next corrupt job will cause the error again. I don't think anyone knows exactly what is wrong with the job either. I noticed the problem when we upgraded past Adobe Reader 7 (versions 8 and 9).

Last year we fixed this problem on HP color 46x0 and 4700 printers by replacing the 615n card (which has had a lot of problems, but that is another thread) with a 620 card.

I have over two hundred 4100 series through 4300 printers in use at my company. A couple of months ago we had 4 of these 49 errors fixed by having the system board replaced under warranty. We noticed that the replacement board had and older firmware installed. I have been very good at keeping up with updating firmware, so all my HP printers have the latest image.

Some may suggest to install the "latest versions of firmware" for the printer . ." This is what we found to be the problem. All of my 4250 printers have firmware 20080319 08.015.0 installed. When users reported the 49 errors on 4 printers a couple of weeks ago I installed the 2007 firmware image on them. In two weeks, none of these printers have had the problem. If you remote into the printer and look at the Event Log, you can see how often this error occurs. I was seeing it happen about every 50-100 pages. I have over 4,000 pages now without a problem on the printers the older image was installed on. I just did 2 more last night and plan on doing this to all over the next month.

  • Anonymous May 29, 2009

I have been fixing the 49 error on multiple printers by installing the older firmware image. Got a reply from HP support to verify my fix.

There are a couple of things that could cause the error:

#1) Bad HP 615n jetdirect card. HP has had a lot of these cards go out. Do a cold reset on the card and reconfigure, may solve the problem.

#2) Driver issue, PS or PCL? Try changing from what you were using. PS usually works better with Adobe products (like PDF documents.

#3) For PS driver printer.
1. Open printer Properties.
2. Go to "Device Settings" tab.
3. Disable the option "Postscript Passthrough" under the "Installable Options".

The 49.4c02 error code happens because of bad communication between the printer and your computer. That can be caused by certain PDF files, the one that is trying to print or a problem with the firmware version of that printer...

It is most likely caused by a print job, so the first thing you need to do is to delete any jobs in your print queue.
One way to determine if its a job is to power off the printer disconnect whatever cable you have it connected to the outside world by and then power it back on and see if you still get the message.

49.xx errors are mostly caused by invalid print commands, corrupt
data, or invalid operations. Basically the printer "does not understand" the print job.

- restart the printer to clear the print job from the printer's memory.

-if the error returns disconnect the network/USB cables from the unit and cycle power again.
If the error comes back without the network/USB connected perform a cold reset on the device and go the next step.
- Once the unit is at Ready reconnect the network/USB cable.

If the unit gets the 49.xx error or begins to print a job then gets the error disconnect the cables again and power cycle the printer. This time when you plug the network/USB cable in watch the control panel for any signs of the unit receiving a print job. When the printer says "Processing" press the cancel button on the printer. This should clear the "bad" print job.

I strongly recommend updating to the latest driver for the device. If you had an issue with a PDF file use the Post Script (PS) driver.

Good Luck

This error is typically due to some sort of data corruption. If this is happening on a single file, it could be that file. It could also be related to the individual software sending the print job, bad print commands or invalid. Although rare, a bad cable or connection can be to blame.

First step is to restart the printer, clear all jobs with the Stop button, restart printer again. Then try printing from another program, such as txt editor. If ok, then print a different file from original software, if ok, then print original file.

If failure is with final print, the file is corrupted for printing, recreate file.
If failure is with original software see if there is any updates.
If failure is there directly after restart, try updating printer driver (this is not be a bad idea anyways).

If none of this works, it may well be a formatter board issue, requiring technical service.

Well I was having the same problem. I cleaned out the queue by canceling the job that it was having the problem with. Turns out the data being sent to the printer was corrupt in this case.

Verifone vx610 decline code 248

This is tricky to answer... different processing service use different codes. If the software you are running is built on a St. Pete's platform, this code means that the transaction you were processing was a 'reversal' (void) and the amount entered didn't match the original.

If you were running a sale and received this code and the display or receipt actually printed "declined" - it is a valid response indicating the customer card was declined and the code tells the service rep at your processing center why it was turned down (over limit, high risk, frozen account, etc...). If the response did show the word "declined", you can call your customer service department for your processor and they should be able to tell you what the code means in their system. If they don't - change processors as this is a standard service.
