I fixed the drive cable just yesterday. If the model is exactly hrx217hxa with the serial number between MAGA–1000001 and 139999 as mine is, it can be quite involved to replace the cable if this is the first time, because honda wants to replace the "control arm" as well. You can find a detailed instruction to replace the drive cable from the following link.

http://www.lawnsite.com/showthread.php?t=281234

The part number that you need to order is 06225-VH7-305, which comes with a very brief instruction on how to replace based on the service manual (not the user manual). The above link will guide you to how to replace the cable, but since the transmission end of the cable changed, you need to replace the "control arm" as well. This requires to disengage the drive "belt", which is the first challenge. Once you disengage it, it is relatively straight forward to replace the "control arm" if you have the right tools (1/8" pin punch and a challen lock plier which are described in the instruction that came with the cable kit).
Engaging the drive belt back on is the biggest challenge in the whole process, unless you have the right tool to handle the powerful spring that pulls the whole transmission to give friction to the drive belt. I spent two hours to try to engage the belt without the right tool (probably you need a "brake spring tool"), and I finally did it.
The rest of the assembly process is straight forward if you memorize what you did for disassembly. The above link can help you as well.
I took pictures of every step, and am going to post it somewhere soon, but if you want to replace it soon, please send me a message if you need help.

I forgot to mention that the "control arm" comes with the drive cable kit 06225-VH7-305.

I just wanted to add that the transmission will drop down to work on it and when done you can start the belt after you have the spring back on, then while having one person pull down on the transmission, another rotates the well, this will pull the belt all the way back on.
Hope this helps.

Honda self-propelled 21" mower (HRB216TDA). Will not self-propel. Not sure which part is bad.

If belt is ok, then likely the rear wheel dogs have seized. Review the following PartsTree diagram, what they call ratchet key item 3.
https://www.partstree.com/parts/honda/mowers-walk-behind-lawn-mower/hrb216-tda-honda-walk-behind-mower-made-in-usa-sn-maaa-1000001/rear-wheel .
When the mower is off, you would normally hear the dogs click as you pushed the mower. These get dirty from debris and then rust up and seize (no longer click). Once seized, the transmission drive shaft just spins inside the drive gear. Remove bolt wheel and wheel to access and clean out all the dirt and debris. Inspect inside side of rear wheel and verify wheel gear is in good condition. If all looks good then onto the drive gear. You could try penetrating oil, but if dogs are seized you'll likely need to remove the gear... the key is spring loaded so take not to loose the key and spring. They're small pieces and once they launch they may be lost forever.
I don't remember if the "cover" has to be removed. If it does, there are a lot of small parts, be careful not to loose and keep in correct order. Consult diagram frequently.

Selfpropelled portion stopped working, replaced broken belt, have correct p/n for new belt, belt is slack ,self propelled not working

There should be 3 pulleys one on the motor on top of the blade, one on the axle for the wheels and one that goes to your cable to engage that pully and tighten the belt, take the cover off that hides the axle and pull your handle for the self propell and see if its tighting, some mowers have a little adjuster to tighten the cable on the self propell handle or even on the cable itself, did you make sure to run the belt between the guides over the blade, let me know what you find so we can further help

HOW DO I REPLACE THE SELF PROPELLED ON MY HONDA MOWER. MODEL HRX217HXA

http://www.lawnsite.com/showthread.php?t=281234

Good pictures on this link to follow. I found it eaiser if you put your mower on a work bench or 2 sawhorse with plywood on them. Read everything on the link for your plan before you start. When you finish you will feel you can fix anything on the mower. Hope this will do the trick for you. Good luck!

Self propell not working right

Leave aside all the puffery about 3-1 and such, you described a front wheel drive (pull) walk-behind (FWD), but are asking why the rear wheels won't propel. When you push down the hand grip the front wheels should spin free. Whan you lower from wheels by releasing pressure on hand grips, turning wheels lowered to ground should propel the mower along with its unpowered rear wheels now turning be ground contact. Reminder, never, ever lift rear drive wheels of any mower off the ground while walking behind with engine running:
  1. You could be struck by blade propelled object.
  2. You could pull mower and spinning blade backward onto your feet.
  3. You could lose balance and be pulled forward in a fall.
Contemporary FWD mowers are recognized by a black chain housing on deck top leading from engine to left front of deck. RWD propelling chains are situated underneath deck so cannot be seen from above.

Wheels will not turn on craftsman rear bagger lawn mower

Is the lever pushed up where the self propelled should be engaged? Yesterday, my wheels stopped turning. I have a break in the cable that goes to the self propelled. I will have to replace the cable.

Self Propelled mower quit self propelling

you probaly have a broken gear or engagment lever. the part the cable goes through before the cable goes thru the deck. you also could have sheared a pin or the plastic gear that drives it.
