More than likey the pins on the usb port have become loose.
You would need to take apart the laptop and either
A. re solder the pins
B. Replace the USB port
C. The motherboard is bad

To solder you will need a soldering iron (perferably one with an adjustable wattage 40Watts should be good and some .2mm solder works good for computers since its very fine and easierto solder small contact points
Once the computer is apart locate the USB port and flip the motherboard over and there should be 4 pins, you should be able to wiggle them if they are loose
Apply solder to loose pin to secure it or form a big glob of solder on it and use a solder pump to pull off all the old solder and re solder, this is the preferred method because it ensure the entire pin is surrounded by new solder
For a Novice this will probably take around 3 hours
As TechyDrood mentioned, also if the connector itself is broken they can be found at many online electronic parts suppliers (www.Digikey.com). Ther will usually be some type of marking on the outer shield of the connector also, this may help identify the manufacturer. Some of the newer pc are going to be using lead free solder, try not to use the leaded solders on these boards. The solder connections will not be as good and prone to fail again if un-like type solders are used. I work in the SMT assembly business and this was found out the hard way. just look for the Pb crossed out logo on the pcb, this will give an indication of leadfree.
First thing you can do (if not done so) is check the drivers

The USB ports are a known issue with this model im affraid, and attached to the motherboard
One thing you can do, if its extra USB ports you need. Most PC hardware shops or local supermarket sell a USB splitter plugs into one USB and gives four ports they are about a fiver.
HP im sure will know of the issues with this machine do you still have warranty?
Hope this helps a little, let me know if i can help further
