With most garage door openers, you can look under the light bulb cover and you'll find two numbered knobs. These knobs set the motor torque/speed ratio. Basically, if the door is really smooth having the knob turned down will make the motor go faster. Turning the knob up will give the motor move "oomp" but it will move a little slower. One knob adjusts the power going up and the other knob adjusts the power going down. This basically depends on how good the springs are working on the door itself. So just adjust the knobs until the motor is running each direction "comfortably".
