Installing thermostat - extra wire?

Installing a honeywell programmable thermostat. My home has 6 wires (white, yellow, orange, red, green and blue) but the thermostat only has 5 (Rh, Rc, W, Y, G). I put the red in Rh, blue in Rc, white in W, yellow in Y and green in G. I left orange unconnected. What is the proper wiring?

You have to go down to your furnace and follow the thermostat wire ...it connects to a terminal strip or fan centre...the color doesn;t really matter...installers mix and match all the time....look at the furnace wiring and mark it down...Red on "R"...Green on "Y" whatever it is...and connect it accordingly upstairs...if you only have 4 thermostat wires downstairs you will need a jumper wire between RH and RC...if you have 5 wires you will see 2 wires on "R" at the furnace.,...and connect either to RH and RC at the thermostat

Need wiring diagram for Honeywell RCT8100

The old thermostat has a second stage heat which is W2. The new one doesn't have second stage heat.
The wiring your describing on the old thermostat is telling me you have a heat pump with second stage heat and the new thermostat is for air conditioning only. You will need to get a thermostat for a heat pump.

Old wiring looks like this yellow =y1 green =G white=w2 orange =O blue=C red=R installing a Honeywell RTH7600 where does the orange wire go we have a heatpump.L

If you have a heat pump, the thermostat that will operate it most generally will have an "O' terminal for the orange wire, this is the circuit that energizes the reversing valve on the heat pump, be sure that the stat says heat pump on the box. hope this helps

I'm installing a Honeywell RTH7600B programmable thermostat and replacing a Honeywell T87F2873. The new one calls for a Red, Green, White, and Yellow wire, while I only have a Red, Green White and Blue....

Every thing the same except take your blue wire and replace the yellow for it. So when you hook it to t-stat goes like this

Red to R
White to W
Green to G
Blue to Y

Hunter 44100A programmable thermostat

Yes you will need the orange (o) wire for the reversing valve in your heat pump. T-stat color code is red (r) for 24v power from transformer. Blue (x or c) is the common or the other 24v power from transformer and this will power your programmable t-stat. Orange is for the reversing valve that will switch your heat pump from cooling and heating. Green (g) controls your inside blower. Yellow (y) brings on your outside unit. White is your backup heat.
