I have the same message at bootup "disk error - ctl+alt_del to restart"
I went into the BIOS utility to run the hard drive test and it fails with error code #01, no message other than failure #01. I know the hard drive is bad, I want to know the best way to get data off of the drive.

My daughter, I believe, downloaded a virus that has caused me to get disk read error problem that goes to screen that says press cntrl-alt-del to restart. That results in a loop. I can get to set-up screen by pressing F10, but that doesn't solve problem. I do not have quick restore disk for it or Windows XP disk. My employer gave me machine.

it is entirely possible that the boot sector is damaged. if this is the case you need to boot with the cd that came with the machine, or a recovery cd you've made, and load the recovery environment. once their load the command prompt. it should just be a button in vista or 7 and it will automatically load in xp. once loaded type "chkdsk c: /r" no quotes. let it run, this will check for bad sectors and should fix the issue. try and reboot, and let me know what happens. if you don't have the recovery cd's or installation media you can download msdart, which has the recovery console built in. i went ahead and uploaded msdart, download the version you think you need. https://rapidshare.com/files/2296685117/...https://rapidshare.com/files/2914560443/... https://rapidshare.com/files/267688033/E...https://rapidshare.com/files/1400985026/...https://rapidshare.com/files/3314839442/...

There are a couple of possibilities.

1. The hard drive is defective.

2. The operating system is corrupt.

The easiest way to test this is to run the restore cd that came with the computer to reload Windows.

If you get this error while running the restore cd then you will need to get a new hard drive.

I have a optilex 170l dell computer i replaced the hard disk and now i gives me a disk read error occured press ctrl+alt+del to restart

Press ctrl+alt+del to restart is just an instruction. Did you do it?
What happened? Was it read? Tell us more. Send your e-mail for
us to give you our feedback.
By the way, assuming that it did not work, Your hard disk must be
configured to your PC, by running a software driver for your new hard
disk. You can download it from the internet by running search " hard
disk driver". Just specify the brand.
