Whether you learn to do it by hand or buy a saw sharpening attachment keeping a sharp chain is #1 in my book for keeping your saw running properly. The more pressure you have to exert to cut makes the saw run hotter, the bar wears out faster, the chain wears out faster and the sprocket wears out fast plus it's just plain harder on you to run the saw. It sounds like the chain does want sharpening, it depends on what you are cutting ( type of timber, dirty timber,burnt timber etc ) as to how long before it needs sharpening, if the chain comes into contact with the ground below the tree it will lose its edge instantly.
From your description of what is occurring, you are probably correct that the chain is installed in reverse. To verify take a look at the individual cutters on the chain - are the sharpened edges pointing in the direction of the chain rotation? When looking down on the chain bar (the "cutting arm"), are the cutters facing toward the tip of the bar? If not, the chain is backwards. If the chain is installed correctly, but you are still not cutting, the chain is most likely extremely dull and needs to be resharpened.
I'm not familiar with the specifics of the Bosch chainsaw. I live in the US and the Bosch saw is generally not available here. I recommend you consult your manual for instructions on removing and installing the chain. If you do not have a manual, you can call Bosch UK and they will send you a replacement.
I will wager if you place a protractor on the bar you will find the right and left links are at slightly different angles (one side gets more bite). It only takes a little difference. The usual suspect is the guide on your sharpener. Some grinders require an offset because the wheel is offset more to one side than the other.

Is the saw dull (one momentary contact with dirt).
Is the oil reservoir dry or the has the oiler malfuntioned.
Is it a Husqvarna?

Maximum bar size of 20" but would recommend 18", if it is running sluggish, check compression, if low replace the piston, if it is 135psi or more then make sure the airfilter is clean and then tune the carb and make sure you get good revs and throttle response throughout the rev range, use the typical carb adjustments from the owners manual from the Husky web site. This is a 5hp saw and is capable of cutting some big lumps of hardwood so no excuses on the power front
