Inefficient high pressure cast iron propane burner

Have brand new high pressure cast iron burner with turkey fryer (Thermos). Only produces yellow flame with a lot of soot regardless of air damper position and regulator valve setting. Connected to 5 gal propane tank nearly full. How to fix?

Make sure you are using an adjustible high pressure regulator. Make sure there are no obstructions insde the burner tube or burner holes.

I'm getting a lot of soot from my propane fired fryer. Otherwise works well.

The burner flames must be BLUE. Yellow flames will produce soot. Sounds like the burner orifice size needs to be checked.

Black soot

Soot is caused by a few things in gas appliances. Propane even more so. Lack of combustion air is usually the culprit. In propane fired equipment orifice alignment, high pressure or the wrong burner orifice can cause yellow flames the result in soot build up. You need to find the culprit. Best to have a service tech check it out and clean it. when you know what to look for it can be easily fixed.

Soot produced by propane heating stove

If it is still producing soot two problems blocked burners burning yellow causes soot , or blocked injectors, or pressure to burners is wrong needs seting to correct pressure

We have a yellow flames

There are few things which causes fryers to produce yellow flame on burners. First- Low gas pressure and volume, second- carbon or soot formation on burner face and heat tubes. Check first if your fryer has one of these conditions and try to address this as soon as possible.

My pitco 35 c the flame is burning yellow and not going inside the very wall i thought it might be the regulator pressure on the fryer on the back side

Low gas pressure will produce low flame quality (yellow flame).
Check and remove any dirt or soot on burner holes, and orifice
Burner flame not going inside the fire tube could be due to soot or carbon build up inside the fire tube blocking the flame path, check the inside of the fire tube, if considerable amount of soot is seen, better have them removed.
Yellow flame will cause a lot of problem on fryers if not corrected as soon as possible.
If you have doubt on your gas regulator, better have a qualified service technician to check it.

Turkey fryer is burning rich w/ yellow flame and cannot be regulated to blue by air mix plates

first check the gas regulator is the presher right? then try cleaning out all the pipe work and the burner jets i bet you have a dead spider stuck in the gas pipe as it enters the burners,,this would upset the air to gas mix,,so its running on a rich gas mix

Regarding charmglow 720-0289. can't get a hot enough flame. cleaned all burners and made sure all orficis on the burner were clear even blew out with air hose

Are the burner flames diminishing as you turn on additional burners? In other words, is the flame size correct when one burner is lit, but too small when several burners are lit? Is the flame a nice blue color or yellow? If yellow, adjust each burner's air shutter at the end over each orifice. Have you tried adjusting the pressure on your propane regulator? (If it's red, don't mess with it) If it's a silver regulator and has a center cap, you can remove the cap to adjust the screw inside, by turning it clockwise in 1/4 intervals until the desired flame size has been reached. It's also possible that your burners have corroded closed somewhat. Do you have cast iron or stainless steel burners? Cast iron burners tend to corrode shut over the years due to moisture. Stainless steel burners just tend to rust away and flake, but usually become flare ups or out of control flames. Anyway, that gives you some things to look at. Hope it helps. Douglas

ON THE CAST IRON BURNERS THERE IS A PLATE WERE THE BURNER INSERTS INTO THE GAS VALVE. THIS PLATE CAN BE ADJUSTED TO ALLOW MORE/LESS AIR TO THE BURNERS BY SWIVELING THE PLATE .CANTHESE BE REPLACED

This 'adjustable plate' is known as an 'air shutter' located at the tips of the venturri tubes which are the tubes that carry the propane from the valve to the burner. These air shutters allow you to control your flame by mixing oxygen with propane to create a yellow flame to a blue flame. The perfect flame is a uniform blue flame with a small yellow tip.

Unfortunately, these air shutters are considered part of the burner itself and cannot be individually replaced. However, if the burner and venturri tubes are separate from each other, you may be able to get a replacement venturri tube without having to replace the entire burner unit.

Hope this helps.

Tried to use my turkey fryer and could only get a yellow flame. Never had a problem getting that nice blue flame before. Do I have a reg problem or a burner prob??

Check your propane tank first; is it getting close to being empty? Check where the hose connects to the burner, there should be an air adjustment there; it looks like a rotating disc with two big holes on either side, this is turned when the burner is lit to adjust the amount of air mixing with the gas. If it's all the way open, you have a yellow flame, if it's closed all the way you have a blue (but weak) flame. Try adjusting that and if that doesn't work, try a different regulator...it is rare a regulator could cause this but it could cause it; just use that as your last resort.

How do I attach the hose to the cast iron burner,do I just thread the brass fitting to the cast iron burner or is there something missing

Hello. Yes, the brass fitting goes on to the burner. At the other end of the hose is the valve and the larger connector for the propane tank. Enjoy your turkey! Regards, Joe
