Hitachi 51f500a rear projection tv screen looks 3d

Hi I have a hitachi 51f500a rear projection tv. and recently i turned my tv on and the screen looked 3d, u can see green red and some other color dont remember which one. but i tried to do the color auto adjust but it didnt work.. what could the problem be?

    Yes I can solder, and i call myself handy, but not sure how handy i am haha.

This model uses two convergence IC's----if 3 D one or both are bad.


Most of the time this set uses either two of the STK-392-110 OR THE STK-392-150 CHIPS.

Both chips and any bad protection resistors around them need to be replaced and the set adjusted.

If you are able to do the repair yourself total parts cost will be under 30 dollars.

Some history for you:
This set like all rear projection tube type sets uses two chips---the ones in your set are Black in color--about 2 1/2 inches wide X 1 1/2 inches tall and are on either one large or two smaller heat sinks with fins on them.

When the chips are installed a white grease called heat sink compound is applied to the metal back of each---the grease transfers heat from the chip quickly to the metal it is bolted to.

After some years the grease dries out from the heat and one of the chips goes instantly.

You can buy a pair of the chips for your set on Ebay for less than 15 dollars plus shipping--

If you cannot do the repair yourself--shop around your area---most shops charge 300-400 for this type of repair. Whoever you get to do it make sure BOTH chips are replaced or you will have the same problem in a few months.

If you open the set and locate the chips---they will have the full STK number printed on them in white letters----there are about 12 resistors around them that need to be looked at--if any are discolored they need to be replaced.

If a shop says it HAS TO GO TO THE SHOP keep looking as any good tech can do this repair right in your home in about 1 hour---I know as I have done hundreds of them.

IF you can solder and are handy I will give you general instructions on how to do the repair and what you need---some people I talk to can either do it or have a friend who can do it for them---let me know

    OK, unplug set---locate the chips and look at the resistors--most of
    the resistors that fail are low value--if you check them with a meter
    they will test like a fuse--no reading means one is gone--all the
    protect resistors will have a location number printed under them on the
    top of the board, like RK56 ETC.



    Some of those resistors will be higher in value--150 ohm or 220
    ohm--they never fail--it is always a low value one that is 1.5 or 2.2
    ohms etc--any that has no reading will usually be a little discolored
    in the middle.



    Locate the chips and do not be surprised it one is a STK-392-110 AND THE OTHER IS A STK-392-150. Hitachi did this on some sets--both are the same part but the 150 is a higher current part and lasts longer. You can replace both with either chip---STK-392-150 WOULD be the best choice.

    If you email me a photo of the board they are on----I can tell you the quickest way to get at them--understand that I am not allowed to give MY email address here but you.....


    Here is what you will need:
    1) Two of the Stk-392-150 chips
    2) A good soldering iron
    3) solder
    4) a desoldering braid or wick to remove the solder--each chip has 18 pins.
    5) some liquid solder flux---it makes removing the solder and soldering the new ones back easy.
    6) some heat sink compound( the braid, solder flux and heat sink compound Radio shack should have)
    7) some acetone or denatured alcohol to clean the bottom of the board after you unsolder the chips--the cleaner the board is the better the new chips will solder back in.

    The hard part is getting at the chips---after you unsolder them they will each have two screws holding them into the heat sinks---with them unsoldered and the screws removed you will have to use a putty knife or flat bladed screwdriver to break them loose from the metal---tap them loose.

    The pins on the new chips have to be perfectly straight or you will have trouble getting all 18 pins in.
    With the new chips--you apply the heat sink grease to the back of each and install them--once they are cleanly in you by hand--do not use a screw gun--put both screws back and hand tighten them down snug

    If you find a bad resistor and need to know the value of it---let me know and I will try to tell you its value etc.

    Presuming you find any bad resistors and replace them and both chips you plug the set in and see what you have---if you get this far--I can scan from a Hitachi book I have instructions for you to enter the tech menu and fine adjust the convergence all over the screen--the customer menu will work but you will get better convergence if you adjust in the Tech menu. I will need to know the CLU number on your Hitachi remote for this--different Hitachi remotes have buttons that do different things in the convergence or DECAM mode.

    Once you id the chips by number--best place to get them is Ebay(where I buy mine) select search and then advanced search--then search by seller-------sewsales55 has the best prices and gives a 6 month warranty on the chips--he has the heat sink grease also.

    Recently I have had several people I helped let me know things came out good--I will follow thru with help even after the solution has been approved.

    Start by id the chips and take a close look at the resistors

Or if your tv has a magic focus option you will need to go to the tv menu go to setup hit magic focus change the options from automatic to manual then hit done a big grid with baby blue lines will appear if your tv is damaged it should have some red, blue and green lines slightly to the left or right what you will do is move each red,blue and green line to the baby blue lines with your controller that will resolve your problem until you get it fixed or changed the chips thats what i did and it looks perfectly fine

Aspect Ratio or Input Issue

Not sure but you might be confusing your aspect selection on your DVR with aspect selections on the tv itself. Make sure you use your hitachi remote & check all available aspect ratios. Find one that suits u best

The second common problem with Projection TV sets is dull video, halos around objects, white looking video, or red overpowers the screen. This is commonly caused by the fluid in the lens being clouded overs. To get fixed either call in a local TV repair company or goto sites such as Tv Repair Kits to get a repair kit with instructions.
