Take a flash lite an look in the tank. You may have debris on the screen. Then also you may have dirt in the float bowl that gets sloched around and covers the main jet. This question is a hard one to answer without being there. You didnt specify what machine.

sounds like you may have a bad coil. you getting gas but no spark if its sputtering can cutting out or it may just need re gapped

Similar issue - buddies CubCadet with Kohler Courage 22 would not stay running. Turned out the coils got rusty where it interacts with flywheel. cleaned the contacts (be careful to shim for proper spacing) and ran like a top.
