Hi nolski,
Have a nice day.
Listed below are the ways to set your calculator from scientific to normal mode.
1.Clear your calculator of the last equation you did by pressing the "Clear" button.
2.Click the "Mode" button and use the arrow keys to scroll over "Normal" mode. This will set the calculator up to do basic equations versus any long algebraic equations, or other types of equations on which your were previously working.
3.Practice setting the mode to normal when your are done using your calculator so you always know what mode the calculator will be on when you turn it on next time.

Thank you for using fixya.
You have your calculator set to give your answer in scientific notation. If you would like it to give your answer in decimal form you need to change the settings. On my calculator which is an older version, you just press [mode] three times. On your screen you will see fix sci and norm as well as the numerals 1, 2 and 3. press [3] on your key pad. You should see norm 1~2? then press [2] on your keypad and this will have changed your settings back to plain decimals.
I hope this helps!

The R at the top of screen reminds you that angle unit is in Radians. The MATH says that the Input/Output mode is MathIO. In this IO mode, fractions are stacked (2levels) as in textbooks.. The R setting should not bother you unless you are doing trigonometry problems (in which case set the appropriate angle unit). The MathIO
allows you to do exact calculations with fractions and radicals. Beside
you can always convert fractions ad radicals to decimals. As to the
f(x)=, I believe you have changed the computational setting from COMP
(usual) to TABLE. In table mode you supply a function and the
calculator generates a table of values. To recover the normal mode COMP, press MODE and select COMP (should be the choice 0:COMP).
there is one choice for you to do push 2nd +7 then 4 then 2 this will reset the whole caculater. if it stills does the same thing then it probly need to ne replaced..
OK,do not worry. Press [2nd][MODE] to access tghe (SETUP) options. Then press 2 to select [2:LineIO]. from now on all your results will be displayed as decimal numbers. Do not pay attention to the D for degrees, if you are not doing angle calculations or trigonometry.
Another point. Since you only want to balance the checkbook, all your numbers have at most 2 decimal digits and it might be less tiresome for you if you configure your calculator to display just 2 figures after the decimal mark.
You have to set how the calculator handles numbers. To do this follow these steps:
1. Press the 'MODE' button. This brings up the calculator's main settings page.
2. Scroll down until you reach a field titled 'Exact/Approx...'. This is the setting for how the calculator handles numbers, whether it will show the exact answer (which is usually in fraction format) or whether it will show an approximate number (which will be in decimal format).
3. Press the right arrow which will bring up the options for that setting. You must now choose between three ways of handling numbers:
-'1:AUTO' will determine which type of answer the calculator will give based on what numbers you want it to calculate (e.g. if you want an answer in decimal format just add a decimal somewhere in your problem).
-'2:EXACT' will automatically display all answers in either whole number format or in fraction format.
-'3:APPROXIMATE' will automatically display all answers in decimal format.
4. After you have selected one of those options pres enter one more time to get out of the 'MODE' dialogue and return to the 'HOME' screen. Now try a problem and see what happens.
Personally I like using 'AUTO' because then I don't have to keep returning to 'MODE' when I want either or.
Hope this helped, I had the same problem when I first started using the TI-89.
