I got a refurbished 504 and I can't get the video to come up. what can I do? I hook it up to DVD player and it doesn't even show there. when I got it it had several movies on it, but when trying to open them it said I needed somekind of software.

Some of their very old sets the video input was located on channels in the 90's; Try scrolling down from 99 to 90 to see if you locate the video input; this is just the way they did things in the older sets.

You can drag and drop dvd files (divx/avi+AAC codecs) into the video folder of the device, but in order to play the you must buy the Archos cinema plugin. Visit the Archos official page and search your model.
Check to see if your DVD player is outputing a progressive scan and turn it off if you are using the S-Video cable, it does not support progressive scanning.
you have to format your hd. for this conect your dvd player to pc. there is coming your hdd with a letter disk . click with the right button mouse and give format. after formating make sure to put some video from media player as described in your manual. (videos must be codec compatible to play). if is repeated same thing check your audi and video setting if nothing.... good luck i dont know another solution.
I have put plenty of DVDs onto my Archos, but I use the optional cradle which connect to the TV as well as DVD players. You simply connect the DVD player onto it and play your dvd, which switching on the Recorder function on your unit.
Alternatively, can you convert the DVD onto your PC and then transfer onto the Archos in normal fashion, or is this what you are saying you tried to do already?
If you select Progressive Scan and your television doesn?t support it, you may end up with a blank screen and be unable to view the menu in order to fix it. If that happens, fix it by turning the DVD player off then back on. Open the disc tray, then press and hold the STOP button for five seconds.
