They could be. Is the smell electrical or rubber.

It appears your fan itself burned out. When a field coil of an electrical fan burns out it usually makes a lot of smoke. The noise could be something that fell in there that stopped the fan from turning freely. I can imagine it heated up under the strain and burned out.

When you restarted it was burnt out so hence no noise and no fan.
The smell of the smoke should also be clue. Electrical field coils burning has an awful soury type of smell.

Actually there not supposed to burn up. I have read some reviews on that model Kenmore and it seems it is plagued by electrical problems.

I would definitely contact Sears customer service.

This is definitely (based on works on Hi only) the Blower Motor Resistor located near the Blower Motor. It is defined with 3-4 wires going into it. It is easy to remove and replace. Purchase the part at the auto parts store versus at the dealer to save you a lot of money.
Install this first before deciding to replace the Motor.
After reinstalling, if the motor is making noise, turn it off IMMEDIATELY so you don't burn the resistor up again. The smell should be either the Resistor burning-up or the Motor burning out. The smell should have an odor like electrical burning?

you may find that you have a build up of old cuttings under the blade impeller if they build up in the drive gear under the impeller then the motor will run slow do not try to use the unit as you will run the risk of the motor burning out fallow the user guide on how to clean and strip your unit down and please unplug it from the mains hope thi helps

disconnect from mains. take cover off compressor electrics. check starting device - easy to replace
