Hi All,
I have a Samsung Q45 that recently decided to break. Recreating the problem:
1. I have the laptop plugged in on mains power and the lights show at the front of the laptop
2. I press the "power on" button and it lights up for about 1 second and then cuts out
3. If I press and hold down the "power on" button it lights up for
about 2 seconds and I can hear the hard drive make the usual clunking
sound when it begins to boot up and then it cuts out
Some background information:
1) My battery stopped working and I had been running the laptop on mains power
2) My power cable stopped working so I bought a new one (non-Sasmung brand)
3) Before the laptop stopped turning on, the laptop would randomly turn
off when on mains power (as there was no battery the disruption caused
the laptop to turn off)
Any ideas on what the problem could be here? Is it as simple as a
broken power switch or as painful as a fried motherboard (and what is
the best way to test it)?
I'd like to try and salvage the laptop as it is still a great little machine!
Probably itz the faulty battery, try replacing it..
i guess ur hdd is also detoriating (as itz emitting much noise), beware!!
however, u shld contact ur system admin/vendor/an authorized service center....
Testimonial: "I was a bit unsure about his poor grammar and spelling (which is never a good sign) but he was able to give some helpful insights into my problem."
the problem is probably incorrect wattage supply usually associated by a faulty LFC/Resistor/MOSFET..esp at power supplies of adapter and or sm section of the system board..nw without a proper test itz hard to locate exactly..!!
well if u r not a professional, u can't opt cheap level repairing, to decide 1st of all u need is replacement of power adapter with a standby....
then u shld go for a system board change..and is sparsely available at the local market..we usually use spares and scraps to fix..bt remember a system esp hdd don't make harsh noise (except mild spinning noise) until n unless itz unbalanced/loose/faulty..
..also see if dust is filled..dust is non-uniform n may cause various damage..sometime it do happen if cpu fan is faulty or is in less rpm..look for heat sink contact with cpu..put some 'heat sink compound' therein right between the contact place with cpu and heat sink..see if there is proper +3v supply present..
no as far as i no..itz not normal..there may b exceptional..but very very common..it do happen while boot up or when hdd gets power..hdd consists of one or more solid n heavy platter(s) like gramophone media/disk in miniature, which is spinning at more than 5000+ rpm just on single pivot which is thick around than a dot pen's nib..there is one lens each on both side of the platter of abt 1mm probably..and the whole assembly do function somewhat alike gramophone....
nw u cn understand how highly balanced they r..due to time, illegal shut down, moving/shacking hdd while in activity, shock etc., may cause damage to it..and the first n common symptom is noise..!!
however, ur great little machine is not down due to hard disk problem, dis is for sure....
yeap it can be the system board but u shld not ovrlook the power adapter/cpu heatsink n fan....
..gud luck....

I hear you on the grammar/spelling, but check out his profile and ratings, he knows what he is talking about.

Usually answered in minutes!
1) There isn't a battery - it's running on mains power
2) The hard drive isn't deteriorating, that's the noise it always makes when it's booting up (and has done for 2 years)
3) The laptop is out of warranty so I want to fix it myself rather than get charged obscene amounts of money by a repair company

I bought a replacement power supply and that didn't fix the problem.
The HDD makes two noises whenever it boots up.. "clunk" [pause] "clunk" and then it spins up
It's been doing that for as long as I can remember - is this not normal?
Could it be the motherboard?
