I have a Generac 4000xl that sat for about a year. I replaced the oil, filter, fuel, charged battery etc. The unit starts and runs but my idle control doesnt do anything anymore. It almost seens to want to over rev a bit. If I choke it i can get the generator idle to go down. If I turn off the idle control the unit will try to compensate. Any ideas?
Check to see if somthing is blocking the movement of the govenor linkage
You say that the idle control dose nothing, the idle control, when on should do nothing unless there is a load placed on the unit, then it should automaticly kick the rpms up so there is power to run what ever is attached, when it is turned off it will kick up the rpms and stay high whether there is something on or not, and is usually used when somthing like a comprssor that will take a large pull and posably stop the generator before it has time to ramp up. so what is it doing other than this ?
The governors work off oil in the engine to move a " paddle wheel " if the oil is overfilled the paddle will not be able to slow the engine down. to check the oil the dip stick should be threaded in all the way. if it isn't over filled, have you checked the switch to see if it is shorted out. the only other thing I can think of is the carb may be flooding and letting to much gas in, but they usually run like **** when that happens, let me know

The governer linkage appears to be free and moving. It will compensate the idle under load. I tried to adjust the idle spring and it doesnt seem to do anything.
The generator used to idle down when there wasnt a load to a lower RPM and then ramp up when the load is applied. This is when the switch was in the on position. Now the idle is high all the time whether the switch is on or off. The RPMs never seem to lower.
