Frost on ice maker

I have a side by side whirlpool refrig/freezer. It is 12 yrs. old. It works great; however, the area where the ice comes out of the ice maker is freezing up. It has TONS of frost on it and then the ice won't come out the door. The ice maker works great. I've taken out the ice storage/maker and defrosted it many times but the frost keeps coming back. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

    tech17,

Thanks! After looking at the door closely. It was not sealed well. Manually, if I push it shut, no frost is formed but if I don't do that the door won't shut properly and frost appears. How easy is it to replace? Where do I get the part?

    Thanks again!

Look at the chute where the ice comes out the door and see if the door in there is sticking open and leaking air in some times it helps to hold a flashlight on the out side aimed up the chute while lookin down on the inside

Refrig won't cool on either freezer or refrig side. Confirmed manual settings & allowed 24 hrs for cooling. Is there a reset switch somewhere other than manual switches inside refrig?

check that the compressor is working by feeling for motor vibrations at the compressor, hot compressor unit or hot fins or back wall of the fridge
if there is not heat then the compressor is not working
call a technician as it could be a start/run capacitor failed or compressor seized
get a quote as some compressor replacements cost as much as a new fridge
check that the utility power is getting to the fridge/freezer

Freezer compartment has frost buildup

This can be caused by the drain hole below freezer coil being blocked by ice. You MUST remove all ice in drain under freezer coil. Use turkey baster to squirt hot water into hole and use hairdryer to defrost. Possible defrost thermostat is defective. Unit never goes into defrost, ice forms on coil and in floor of freezer. After defrosting may work OK for a week or two but gradually gets warmer because ice is blocking ports where cool air gets to refrig. May also have water in refrig box. Can also be caused by defective defrost timer.

ED25PQDW01 side by side refrig -freezer is inconsistent. Need to have full cold to maintain freezer temp. cleaned coils, but still an issue.

Do you see a light coat of frost in freezer section about 12 inches up (defrost problem indication) ? Has the icemaker slowed down a bit in ice production ? What is the refrigerator control set on ? When you turn the freezer up completely , it cuts off the cold air flow which cools the refrig section . If refrig control is set mid way , turn it up higher , so refrig will run longer , but lower the freezer setting so some cold air will enter the refrig section . Also check to see if the freezer fan is working .

check the back of the refrigerwtor there shpoould be a opening where the water goe into the freezer for the ice maker. you need to seal it up so that the moiust air from outside does not enter the freezer.
