Check the settings in the control panel. These are the energy saving settings. You may have them set to shut the computer down to save energy, power, etc. Set them to reflect just what you need now.

You haven't mentioned if it turns off abruptly or shuts down telling you that the PC is shutting down.

- When your PC turns off abruptly, its mostly the CPU which heats up. The reason may vary from the CPU fan stopped working to CPU gone bad.

- If its a proper shutdown, most probably there is a virus on the PC.

KIndly feel free to ask me if you need further clarification

Laptop will not shut of after closing the lid

In Windows XP, Open Control Panel, Power Options, set to High Performance, set Sleep and Hibernate to no/never, set what to do when lid is closed. Use this procedure: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-xp/help/setup/configure-power-management It's a good idea to Shut down at Start Menu and unplug when not in use to prevent damage due to power surges, and IF the battery malfunctions, prevent a fire hazzard.

Shuts down on boot up

hi sir,

Does it just shuts down or it reboots?
If it shuts down this type of problems can be resolved by scanning the computer for a virus or
using the Windows Repair Disks. During boot if you can hit F8 and use safemode with command and prompt.

1 Type CHKDSK/F then hit enter
2 Press Y then hit Enter then reboot to see if this works.

If it reboots while booting up then.

Other things that might be preventing the computer to boot up most likely is the memory.
Take out the memory put it on a different slot or try a new memory.
Also make sure that the power supply fans are not dirty this prevents the computer to bootup.

My Nextbook shut down and won't come back on

If the temperature is hot in your place then the PC Laptop may shut down due to overheated system. The machine automatically shuts down to prevent any internal damage. However in some cases you can prevent the shut down if you can control the speed of the CPU fan which can be done by the following software called "Speed Fan 4.42".
Download it from here.

If the weather is not hot around you and the system still shuts down then at least cleaning service is required from a good repair shop or a tech. There must be a lot of dust and the ventilation system might be choking with dust and unwanted atmospheric objects so proper air flow can be maintained in the machine.

Good Luck!

Hi Have a Dell Pc Windows 7 OS. it will not shut down unless I hold the button. Start-up in good shut down is always a problem

This is a possible malware or virus attack. Your system is encountering data or system corruption preventing it to execute the command during shut down. Best fix is to reinstall Windows 7 in your computer to erradicate all errors and make sure to install an updated security software (antivirus) afterwards.

Computer turns off on its own not all the time but once or twice a week. I turn computer off when Iam not using it

It could be "bad" RAM (Windows crashes, and shuts itself down, to prevent corrupting the files on the disk-drive).

It could be "overheating" (hardware shuts down to prevent combustion).

My computer shut down windows to prevent damage from my computer

Try tapping the F5 or F8 key (could be either one) right after you power up. This should take you to a short text message with a couple of choices to continue; you'll find the Safe Mode option there.
