Hi:
Most of the time it is a keyboard failure. You can troubleshoot this by plugging in an external keyboard and seeing how that works, but most of the time it is your keyboard. They are not expensive on ebay, maybe $15 + shipping, and not hard to change

Vgn-nw150j keyboard Sony Vaio many keys stopped working all of a sudden need help?

Laptop keyboards do deteriorate from time to time. Once any key stops working, it is time for a replacement. Doing so is not difficult. Simply undo the case screws and gently separate the case to expose the keyboard. The keyboard floats inside and lays in the main board. Lift gently and pull out the small flat wire connection. The keyboard slides out and replace with a new board. Place flat cable in port on the main board, lay keyboard on top of chassis, close the top/bottom of case, tighten screws and all done. Go on line for Keyboards.

I have a sony vaio vgn fs980 laptop. all of a sudden the keyboard stop working. i purchased a new keyboard. However the same problem exists. I can use an external keyboard that will work fine but the...

On every computer motherboard there is what's called a UART chip. This chip is responsible for capturing every keyboard click, interpreting what letter it is, converting it to zeros or ones used by computers, and sending it to the processor for action. If this chip fails, even replacing the keyboard won't fix it.
Unfortunately this chip is usually part of the motherboard so the only way to replace it is to replace the motherboard, which usually isn't cheap. If you can live with the external keyboard you might want to stay with that. Otherwise, if you Google sony Vaio motherboards, I'm sure you can find a number of sources online to purchase a motherboard. Replacing one is tricky but not insurmountable if you take your time and can follow directions, also available online.
Best of luck! Hope this helps!

The keyboard on my boss' sony vaio VGN TZ 340 seems to be locked. At least it doesn't work. Cleaning around it didn't work. Could she have unintentionally hit a key or function key that would cause this...

no there is no key that does that, your boss spilled somthing on it and thus it doesnt work, could need a new keyboard or just connection to motherboard.

My shift keys do not work on my sony vaio. I have a VGN-N130G. Neither shift key works, however, the CAPS LOCK works. It was fine yesterday. I did restart the computer and it did not fix the problem.

sad to say but if you want you can replace it with new one. or you can use a usb keyboard. or just let it be until some of the keys become defective. its your choice.

Hi my sony vaio vgn-sr13gn, shift key does not work at all. not even in Command promt. Both shift keys don't work. What can I do?

A friend of mine has the same problem and i stumbled on your question today. This problem occurred with the Vaio VGN-FZ11E, after very very modest usage, no scratches or damage visible whatsoever.

There's one option out there:

"I found that if you hold down both left and right shift key at the same time (did this for several seconds), it somehow solved the problem. Hopefully that fixed the issue. Also, go to control panel, click on accessibility options..in the keyboard tab, click on the settings buttons for sticky keys, filter keys and toggle keys and deselect the option to use shortcut..hopefully this will help you and other people that have had this problem."
Quoted from here

If that doesn't work, seems to me the remark of Benwabnick seems to be the solution, as posted below.

the contact underneath the shift key itself is starting to go bad. Its a common issue with sony laptops, the keys can wear out pretty quickly. You'll have to get another keyboard.

Sony vaio keyboard fault

Hello, my name is Chris. Easy solution. Buy a new key board. Thats all you can do in this situation. There not worth trying to fix. A key board will cost about 10.00.
