Can't get channel 3 off the upper right hand corner of Sony Wega TV (26" model without PIP). Comcast recently replaced my digital cable box with an HD digital cable box. I don't remember the channel number being there all the time before the cable box replacement. I don't see an option in the manual that lets me not display channel numbers. Could the channel number be coming from the cable box?

On your remote control (with tv off) 1. press Display, channel 5, Volume Up and then Power this brings up the service mode (you will see some green text on your screen) 2. Press channel 2 to scroll through options until you see "Micro" in the upper left of your screen (channel 2 cycles up through the options, channel 5 cycles down) 3. Press channel 1 to scroll through suboptions until you see "DIOF" appear under "Micro" (channel 1 cycles up through the suboptions, channel 4 cycles down) 4. Press channel six until the default value (12:60) changes to 12:40 (channel 3 increases the value, channel 6 decreases the value) 5. Once the value has been changed to 12:40, press Muting and you should see red text in the upper right hand corner that says "Write" 6. Simply turn the power off and back on for the change to take effect. Your volume problems should now be fixed.
I had this exact same issue just yesterday. Channel info would flash
intermittently. While set was in this mode, could not enter menu,
change channels, etc. from remote or front panel controls. Similar to tjh492, I thought it might be an
overheating issue. But unplugging the Viera and waiting for set to cool
made no difference.
I then remembered that this issue popped up the instance I surfed to a
particular channel (FWIW, 26-3 "Me Too" on Comcast here in Aurora,
Illinois, USA). I had a hunch that there might be an issue with the
signal on the channel that prevented the Viera from properly syncing,
so I decided to unplug the antenna cable. Once I did that, the channel info
displayed steady. I was then able to change channels (of course screen
was blank as antenna cable was unplugged) and enter the Viera menu. I
immediately went to channel set-up and manually removed channel 26-3
from the channel list. After reconnecting cable, Viera was back to
normal. Since I'm not a big fan of "Me Too", problem solved :)
Not sure why a digital channel sync issue would effectively make the
Viera remote and front panel controls inoperable. Pure speculation, but it could
be that the Viera microprocessor was overloaded trying to sync to channel and this prevented any interrupts from remote or front panel
controls.
I do not believe that such a device exists, however I do have some options for you:
1) get a magnifying window to put in the corner where the number is to magnify that section for your father.
2) Have TV repair shop install a signal to voice converter to take the number generated signal and convert it to a voice so that way the changing of the channel will be heard as a voice as opposed to a number.
3) Have the number geometry changed by a TV repair shop with the ability to reprogram the EEPROM that controls the number generation circuit.
I hope these suggestions give you some idea of what is possible.
can you turn on the tv manually? or with the original sony remote control
are you using the channel 3 or any video input to display the tv picture.
thanks
the tac switches have gone bad.this happens from age or sometimes from washing the screen of the set and moisture gets on the.. it is not a big job but it does involve soldering skills
if you have the manua for the universal remote that you are using it the button that displays current channel on the tv or the one that say jump. flashback or channel return might be bottom R corner of the remote or a small button on either side of the zero button
