I found the resolution on this site. I removed the face of the unit and hit the reset button on the right side of the unit. I put the faceplate back on. I connected the unit to my laptop via USB port. I downloaded the software for the c5550 from the Garmin site. I installed the base software and the upgrades. I left it connected to the laptop for a few hours to fully charge. I then disconnected it from the laptop and hit the red button to turn the unit on. I received a software update message, when that was done, the unit completely booted up.
i had a simalar problem -i asked for an update off garmin and they sent me a disc with apdated maps but didnt tell me i had to first delete the loaded maps you will have to go on the garmin website and order the FREE update disc for uk and ireland and just follow the instructions when you recieve it hope it works for you ;>)
The only way to update the maps is to purchase new maps from Garmin and download them via the computer. The 2008 map updates are currently available, and Garmin has told me new maps will be out in a few months.
