He is full of **** trying to scam you. It sounds like your disc drive is out of alignment with the top part of the disc drive so the clicking your hearing is the bottom of your disc drive trying to eject and the top is holding its on as the top has sliding parts that meet perfectly with the bottom part of the disc drive so it sucks the game in and out. You need to open it yourself with a philips head screwdriver you dont have to worry about the motherboard or any other part just take the drive out undo the ribbons connect the drive to the motherboard then it should pop right out. Been awhile since I took a slim apart they dont break as often (yet). From here you should have a metal caseing over the disc drive maybe not with the slim. You pop the metal caseing off the you have a plastic disc drive. Take the top part off maybe requires small phillips screw driver. Since you have a disc in it when you take the lid off hook the cables back to the ps3 motherboard and to the cd drive. Now press eject with the top lid off. Then put the top lid back on and insert a disc it should work. Then just put it back together. Theres a little motherboard on that cd drive do not short it out on anything. You can do this if you cant worst is youll have to buy a new cd drive from the repair shop you mentioned. Then they should charge to much labor to put it back together as you had it apart when you got there. But you should beable to do it if you need help taking it apart just google or youtube slim ps3 disc drive repair or how to take apart slim ps3. Hope this helps if not let me know.
You have to make sure you keep the original blu ray logic board that came with the original drive on the PS3. It is the circuit board that is screwed onto the underneath of the blu ray drive. Swap this board over and it should all work again.
Base from the description of your problem this can be a an issue with the lens of your PS3 since it wont read disc at all, what you can do first here is to use a lens cleaner that you can get from any electronic store and run it to your PS3 to clean the lens that may have some dirt on it. Then after doing that and still same problem the lens will need replacement already. Have it check or replace from a Sony service center.
you might have damaged your disc drive. if there was a cord connecting the top of the ps3 and the disc drive and it got disconnected try reconnecting it by putting it on the top ps3 cover and back into the tray. takes alot of work if you don't want to send it back in.
I am guessing you had a disc in the drive when you took it apart (or maybe the coins had something to do with it).
What you need to do is disassemble the Bluray drive again. With the top cover off of the Bluray drive, power on the PS3, then hit the eject button. The plastic guides should snap into the right position and then you can reassemble and it will work again.
Try reformat your hdd under setting. That will help. It happened to me too. So I took this step and its work. Make sure you back up all your data in your USB drive fefore you do it.
When you put the Disc drive back together, the mechanism probably did not go togther properly. You have to put it together with a disc in the drive. It is very hard to get the disc player to go back together properly I know. I needed three hands to do it. I done one. It took me several tries, but I finally got it. Another thing, since you have already disassembled your PS3 and need to do it again, go to Radio shack and get some Thermal heat transfer compound, Replace the compound between the heat sinks and processors. The original compound dries up after about a year and will kill your PS3 completely if you do not do this. Good luck,I know its not going to be easy.
