Kirby G5 Vacuum power switch problems

My vacuums on/off footswitch began sticking and then stayed on unless I unplugged it. I removed the cover thinking there was a contact problem and noticed an engaging bar attached to the plastic footswitch. Can you help? I'm a broke father of 2 babies and cannot afford to bring it in for service. Would like to do the repair myself. I would appreciate any help!! Without a vacuum my son will have my home buried in debri. Thank you!

I have basically the same problem. The G5 will not turn on when depressing the on/off switch.

also...the bag and the powerhead activate safety switches when properly attached to the kirby. Make sure the bag is completely on the kirby. It's normally the one that keeps the kirby from turning on since the bag can be a bit stiff to twist onto the kirby at times.

I unscrewed the 4 screws on the bottom of my gen 3 mistakenly trying to replace wheels. now it turns on sometimes when the on button is pushed and sometimes it doesn't. is there an easy fix?

Easy fix... wow... um.. maybe.

I think that you may have accidently disconnected the metal arm between the foot pedal and the actual switch. Its not a problem, but you will have to open the top of the kirby unit to see if it has been disconnected or not. we are trying to get to the area above the wheels but below the foot switch.

first, take the handle and the bag off the unit and lay them down.
next, take the plastic covering around the switch off, you will need a flat screwdriver to take that off. the pry spot is just above the switch where you can slide in the screwdriver.
next, lift up the light and remove your belt/brush attchment off the front of the unit.
remove the 2 screws at the top portion looking just above the shaft sticking out of the unit.
remove the 2 screws behind the foot switch
you should see what looks like a 7/L chrome metal bar going between the footswitch and an orange plastic piece inside the unit where the bag goes. it should be inside the orange plastic piece and inside the lower portion of the footswitch.

I think that when you dropped the wheels it may have come off of the footswitch. re-attach and you should be good to go.

Good luck.

Kirby G5 intermittent power

I would say that it is a short in the power cord.

Kirby G5 vacuum

check the cord. see if there are any frays. or broken spots. usually it is one of 3 things. 1, faulty electric cord. 2. the attachment or floor nozzle not being properly attached( kind of a duh issue LOL)
3. a faulty switch assy. the switch can be kind of a bear to replace. I hope it is the cord. if not i would take it to a kirby repair person, because it is very easy to damage the motor assy when replacing a kirby switch. trust me i have damaged a few learning how to do it

No power

I'm not familiar with Kirby vacuums, but press your reset button a few times (if you have one). If that does not work, then it is most likely the switch. For a rough estimate of the switch or parts for your vacuum, please refer to Sears Parts website and have your model number ready.
