This is Acer m5100: windows vista home premium I have Acer System and recovery cd/disks and I am trying to restore system back to factory settings.
Attempts to boot from cd is good, but when doing restore i receive error reading disk message. I'm guessing that the error is from attempt to read or access the c: drive since it boots up using the recovery disks.
When I enter dos command to change directory to c: drive, the system will not change drives. I can change to my usb drive with no problem. So unless I can access the c: drive, I don't think that I can format it.
When I do a diskpart, seemingly the only available drives are the cd/dvd and my flash drive. c:drive and various other volumes/drives like D:, E: etc are there but all are listed as removable media. I imagine those are for the usb slots that are on the system.
So, how can I get the system to recognize the c: drive so I can use that drive to reinstall operating system.
Thanks,

You are really not giving enough information to be of good help.
What kind of restore have you tried to do? Have you tried to restore from MS Backup ?
Is this a system restore.?
Anyway, if you have your system restoration disk, install it and fallow the prompts.
Or is you are restoring from vista, type recovery manager and select from the list of items.
If you are trying to do a complete restore, choose that item.
Ok, try removing all external devices, such as flash drives and external CD or DVD drives.
Reboot your system and F-? to get into your BIOS. ( On your model, i am not sure what key it is. )
Reset your configuration to default and save.
Install your restoration disk and try to format and install from cd/dvd drive.
Note.... If your hard drive is damaged, or if the 2 boot sectors are damaged, you may have to replace the drive.
If you have a restoration disk or system disk, you will only confuse the system using a USB flash drive.
I hope this infirmation has been of some help.

If you are trying to do system restore, you can try to luanch it under safe mode. Turn off your computer and when its starting up, press F8 key on your keyboard continuously until you have advanced boot option. Now choose Safe Mode with Networking. Then login as Administrator. Before the Safe Mode screen comes up, it will prompt you for YES or NO option. YES if you want to continue to Safe Mode and NO if you want to Run the System Restore. Click NO and restore your computer to the specific date that you want. You shouldn't have problems running System Restore on Safe Mode.
If you can not do a restore, then it is likely that there isn't a previous restore point made or stored.
If this is the case, you have two options, 1. Go to my computer, find C: drive, right-click on it and choose to format the drive. 2. Get a System Rescue CD and run the program and it will wipe pc completely clean. You will need to reinstall windows OS and all your drivers.
A virus can cause many problems. But a bad HD will just not read at all. You can try eusing free registry cleaner or AVG free anti-viurs, anti-malware, anti-spyware

It is because of harddisk bed indexing error. For that you need recovery disk or winodws disk. Then boot computer with that disk then enter in recovery console mode then type in prompt "chkdsk /r" then press "y" then it fix error on harddisk. Then repair your windows . Let me know if you need more assistance. Thanks.
When you power up the computer press F1 or F2 or "del" key to enter in bios. Then disable SATA option.and save and exit settings. Let me know if you need more assistance. Thanks.

If this laptop is still under warrantee, I'd get it replaced. You could spend hours/days tracking down the cause of this. You could spend hours/days updating faulty drivers, running diagnostic tests such as Memtest, HDTune. You may even fix it - however what's to say the problem doesn't re-occur somewhere later in life.
That's why we have warrantees. I'd use it if you can.
Their could be several possible reasons and solutions for the above error, basically what is happening is for some reason the CD/DVD burning software is unable to determine the Optimum Power Calibration rate (a small pre-burn test to determine optimal laser power for writing), resulting a disk burn failure. There is no easy way to pinpoint the exact reason, so try all the possible fixes from top to bottom (easy to hard) and see what works:
Try using different brands of quality blank media, most common reason for such error's is cheap blank media.
Try burning at lower speeds (Highly effective).
If this fails try a different burning software
My 0xc000000c "Restore Failed" prompt seemed to be the result of disk surface damage on the restore disk. After burning the restore disk to a new disk, the restore proceeded normally. Try making a copy of the original restore disk to a known good blank disk.
most likely due to a virus infection scan your computer for viruses with latest virus definition updates
and
use system restore to restore sytem to a previous date when it was working properly
Did you install a new hard drive in the Acer? They have had problems when trying to restore windows onto a new drive or trying to use system restore on the existing drive. The same error message comes up.
It seems that when the pqservice partition is not on the drive, the recovery DVD won't work if the drive contains any partition (Restore Failed - reason 0xa000000e) is all you will see.
However, try deleting everything on the drive (leaving only unpartitioned space) before putting in the recovery DVD. The eRecovery tool first says that it is repartitioning the drive and then starts the install successfully.
I hope this helps.
I think your problem relates to the TuneUp Utilities program. Go to Control Panel -
Add/Remove Programs and look for the program. Remove it. Then you should be able to run the updates. Good luck.
The recovery partition is corrupted. 1st option is, You can send your computer to acer repair center in germany. I believe acer have international warranty. 2nd option is to buy the recovery cd from acer, you can installed by yourself.
About downloadable OS, i don't think they have it online.

Also, could the hard drive just be bad now even though it is only a year and 6months old?
And could a virus have caused this to occur to begin with?
Thanks
