Hi trueworddeli...
Try this solution to your problem
Go to Device Manager
To get to the Device Manager
Right click on MY COMPUTER> PROPERTIES> click the Hardware tab> Device Manager
Here you should see no "yellow" exclamation points.
If you do then it means that you have a device conflict.
If you currently have your unit plugged in, you may notice the "unknown device" which would be your MP3 Player
Click on any item that has the exclamation and remove it.
After you remove all devices with conflicts and then click on refresh, and you will search for your MP3 player.
If you MP3 Player is not there restart the computer and then go back to Device Manager.
The computer will have installed your MP3 player this time and recognize it..

ok, 224 MB ram sounds like 256Mb with 32 being used for Video Ram. 854 MB would be a non standard amaount of ram., in other words, it is not divisible by 128. If you have more than one ram stick in the machine, then it is likely that one of them has gone bad an dwill need to be replaced.
