Hello, i just purchased a power acoustik ps2 1600 power amp from a friedn really cheap because he said it stayed in protection mode all the time since he bought it new. but he couldn't return it because he lost the reciept. anyway i hook it all up and turn the radio on which in turn cuts the remote wire on then in about 1 second all 3 fuses blow. i took the amp apart and didn't see anything burnt on the board or anything obviously wrong with it. i would appretiate any and all help. thanks Jamie
Generally, this would indicate that the output transistors are shorted (which is generally a relatively simple repair). But an amplifier that never worked properly could indicate that it has a manufacturing defect. Sometimes, it's as simple as a bridged solder connection. Other times, it could be due to a missing component (which may be more difficult to repair).
The first thing you need to do is to check the output transistors. They will typically be the larger devices clamped to the heatsink. If you find any that are shorted (~0 ohms) between legs 2 and 3, you have at least one shorted transistor.
Before you do anything inside the amp, remove it from the power source and read the following page:
