Freezer is running constantly and sides and top are hot.

I have noticed this today, that my freezer is running constantly and the sides and top are hot to the touch. The freezer is ten to 12 years old, so I am wondering if it is "dying" on me or what could be the problem. I need an answer fairly quick as I am going to be picking up about 200 lbs of meat on Monday. The food in the freezer is frozen, so it seems to be working fine, I am just worried about it being so hot.

Kenmore side by side water leaking from freezer

You can buy a kit from whirlpool. In the kit is a metal tab that mounts onto the defrost heater. It is long enough to go into the hole. When the heater comes on for defrost the heat transfers down to the hole and keeps it from getting plugged up with ice. Part number 819043

The top half of the freezer does not work

I have a Scandinova chest freezer and the left hand side froze, but not the right side, because the compressor in the box under the right side of the freezer was getting so hot, a small amount of heat was conducting back through into the right side of the freezer and preventing anything on that side from freezing!
I solved this problem by running the compressor outside of the of the freezer box, by taking the air vent off, unbolting the compressor and then pulling out by about 20cm and running it from there.

I have an upright Frigidaire freezer. The outsides (left and right) are hot to the touch. Is it a problem?

No. Instead of exposed coils on the back side, many (most) freezers place the condenser coils near the outer wall of the freezer to disipate the waste heat removed from inside the freezer. It will not be as noticable when the freezer is not running, and is completely normal.

HI I HAVE AN OLD 13 CU. FT KENMORE UPRIGHT FREEZER. AFTER I DEFROSTED IT YESTERDAY AND AFTER IT HAD BEEN PLUGGED IN FOR ABOUT 6 HRS I NOTICED THAT THE SIDES OF THE FREEZER FELT VERY HOT . IS THIS NORMAL ?...

It had to run longer than normal to cool down the freezer again. The heat from the compressor running is what you feel.

I would not worry about it unless it is still hot after 24 hours. Then there is another problem.

Exterior side walls VERY hot

Hi wjjlaw,
ngafm at your service,

Is the hot side th open side or against the wall or cabinet side?

Have you touched this side before in he two years you have this appliance? Or is it that you just noticed it?

And if you can keep your hand on that spot for a long time it is not so hot only warm? If it is not burning your had it is probably just the characteristic of that fridge!
Check if the freezer part is full to the top and packed full.
Freezers can not be so full that you cover the cold air vents usually found in th rear of the freezer.

My advice is only a trained tech can remedy this problem, this time!
If I were there I'm sure I could nail it down!

You need hands on service!
Bless You ,
ngafm,
Please give me a good rating before you sign off.
Thank you.

Outside surfaces of freezer very hot to touch

it should be warm to the touch but not so hot you cant. and also depending on how long the freezer is running and how warm it is where the freezer is will effect how hot the outside is. the reason the outside of the freezer is hot is because thats how the freezer releses its heat from the refrigerant. the longer it runs or the harder it has to work the more heat it has to hive off. so unless the freezer is not cooling there is nothing to worry about.

Sides of freezer extremely hot

if there is air getting into the freezer because the door is not sealing properly the unit will run because it is sensing it is not cold enough inside. your unit releses the heat from the refrigerant through copper tubing that runs through the cabinet, and thats why it is hot. you need to level the unit make sure the door is sealing on the top bottom and both sides ansd then the freezer will work properly and be able to shut off after it has come down to the proper temp.
