I have a canon MP520 - its been warning me for quite a while that the absorber is almost full. Now it has stopped working at all - saying that the absorber is full. How can i clean the waste...

There are ink absorbers located at both ends of the printer where the ink head move.
To dry the ink absorber, power up the printer and open the cover so the ink cartridges and print head moves to the middle of the printer.
Then take several sheets of absorbent tissue, fold it into a pad and place it inside the printer over the ink absorber on the far left hand side of the printer to soak up the excess ink. You may need to change the absorbent tissue a few times. Then repeat the same procedure on the right hand ink absorber.
Close the lid and the printer should now function normally.

Blinng orange light

Answer Part 1 of 2

An error has occurred in the printer. The number of flashes indicates the type of error, as outlined below. Check the cause and take appropriate action.
Two flashes: Out of paper or paper feed error
Reload the paper correctly and press the RESUME/CANCEL button.
Three flashes: Paper jam
If paper has jammed in the printer, clear the jam, reload the paper in the printer correctly and press the RESUME/CANCEL button.
See Paper Jams
Four flashes: Ink tank is not installed properly
Open the Print Head Cover and check whether an ink tank is installed. If an ink tank is installed, push the button of the ink tank, and reinstall the ink tank properly.
Five flashes: No Print Head installed, or Print Head failure
Install a Print Head.
When the error continues, contact a Canon service representative.
Eight flashes: Waste ink absorber almost full
Ink used for cleaning is absorbed in a waste ink absorber placed in the printer. Eight flashes indicate that the waste ink absorber is nearly full. Press the RESUME/CANCEL button to cancel the error so that you can continue printing.
Important
If this error occurs, replacement of the waste ink absorber and maintenance of the printer are required. Canon recommends to contact a Canon service representative as soon as possible. Once the waste ink absorber becomes completely full, it cannot be printed until the Waste ink tank is exchanged.

Nine flashes: A specified period of time has lapsed without receiving a response from a digital camera or digital video camcorder / The digital camera or digital video camcorder connected is not compatible with this printer

Canon i550-turn on-orange/green 8x then long green

From the Canon website:

Issue: Alarm / Power light flashes orange 8 times consecutively (Waste Ink Nearly Full Error)
Solution: Ink Absorber Replacement Options i550

Ink Absorber Replacement Options

This printer has an ink absorber that takes in ink during the printing and print head cleaning processes. The cleaning process is necessary in order to keep the print head nozzles from becoming clogged. Over the life of the printer, the amount of ink that the ink absorber has absorbed is calculated by the printer. Eventually, after substantial use, the printer will enter an error condition when the ink absorber is nearly full. At this point, printing is still possible by pressing the <Resume> button on the printer. To protect the printer from damage, you will not be able to print at all once the ink absorber is full.

Canon recommends having the printer serviced before the absorber becomes full. We are aware that there are many "do-it-yourself" Web sites that offer instructions for making this repair. Replacing the ink absorber is a complicated and potentially messy procedure. Even if the ink absorber is successfully changed, the ink absorber counter must be reset. Be aware that if you attempt this procedure, it is at your own risk.
