Remove the plastic battery cover from the handset (but keep the a battery connected), then place the handset on the base. That will enable the metal contacts at the bottom of the handset to touch the ones on the bottom of the base.
If the handsets are not currently registered to any base, the SYSTEM RESET menu won't appear.
If the TCX905 handsets in question are actually expansion handsets from another Uniden Phone System, they are not true TCX905 handsets. To verify, remove the battery cover and battery, then look at the inside label. If it lists the model of a TRU9xxx phone system, your handsets are NOT TCX905.
Uniden unfortunately has programmed the expansion handsets from SINGLE LINE TRU9xxx phone systems to NOT REGISTER against the TRU9466. (Those same handsets register fine against predecessor model TRU8866 though).
1. First, remove the battery cover on your unregistered TCX905 and look
under the battery to confirm that you indeed purchased a TCX905 because
some Uniden handsets were packaged as 905's but were not.
2. Take the fully charged unregistered 905 to the base unit TRU9496.
3. On the TRU 9496 base unit press "Menu" then select "Registration" and press OK
4. You should get the message "press the # key on the remote handset".
5. Depress the "#" key on the unregistered 905 and it should register.
I had the same problem until today. This is what I did: I opened up the handset and took most of it apart: There are 2 screws in the battery compartment and you have to push something in on the sides to pull it apart. It won't come completely apart because there are wires connecting to the speaker. There are 5 screws on the inside that hold the board to the phone. I unscrewed those. The buttons are all on 1 rubber sheet. The problem is that the 4 metal connectors under the 4 way button (not on the board, the ones on the back of the rubber) have somehow deteriorated. To fix it I glued a very small piece of tin foil (I used a really thin brand) to each of the 4 connectors. They have to be done separately and the foil can't be too thick or the foil will be touching the board without a button press (found this out the hard way). Test it before tightening the screws to make sure everything worked and then put it back together. Note: You may need to ground yourself so static electricity doesn't fry the board. If it breaks the phone, don't blame me :) I went this route because it was either play around to find a solution or buy a new phone. I don't know how long this will work for, but I hit all the buttons a bunch of times and they all work.
Same manual as lethean provided on a similar post but Page 24 if the previously used Base is Unavailable and your phone shows "Deregistration" in the Menu.
Base Unavailable (Handset Only)
To clear the base registration data in the handset, please follow these steps:
Press and hold [] and [#] for more than 5 seconds. Select the BASE UNAVAILABLE submenu.
BASE UNAVAILABLE appears. Move the cursor to select YES, and then press the OK soft key.
ARE YOU SURE? appears. Move the cursor to select YES. Press the OK soft key.
from uniden regarding your base station: "This expandable base system is
compatible with Uniden handset models ELX500, TCX400, TCX440, and
TCX805. However, only the ELX500 is compatible the base system's
Bluetooth and CellLink features."
I just successfully registered 4 TCX905s with my TRU8865 base - it's documented in the TCX905 manual.
Be sure the handset you want to register is fully charged.
Remove the handset you want to register from its charger.
Now unplug the AC for the main base, hold down the 'find handset' key on the base and plug the AC in again, when it beeps, you can let go of that button.
Hold down the '#' on the handset you want to register, it will show 'Registering Handset...' and when it beeps, it's done - registered, you're good to go :)
