I have a nikon d60 and all of a sudden when i take a picture i get the hourglass and a (roughly) 3 second delay before i can see the image. did i hit a setting or something? how do i get it back to seeing the image instantly?

Tip: The max point reward for answering a question is 15.
Look for "Noise Reduction" and "Active D-Lighting". Turn those to off individually and you'll see which one makes the most difference. Turn both off and you'll be able to shoot like mad. See page 55 and 178 of D60 owners manual to turn on and off. TC
If you could see the picture on the screen before taking it, there was something seriously wrong with your D60, which apparently now seems to have fixed itself. The D60 doesn't have the LiveView feature which allows you to use the screen instead of the viewfinder to compose your picture.
Set the D60's shooting mode to one of the two remote modes. Quick-response remote takes a picture as soon as you push the button on the remote. Delayed-response remote waits two seconds so you can hide the remote behind your back.
I assume you're referring to the ML-L3 infrared remote?
Select Release Mode from the Quick settings display. Select Quick-response remote. This will make the camera take a picture when you press the button on the remote. Well, almost. The same focusing and exposure metering delays occur as if you'd pressed the shutter release button.
You can also use the Delayed remote mode for group pictures. This gives you two seconds to hide your hand behind your back before the camera takes the picture.
By default the D60 will time out after one minute if you don't press the button on the remote. Custom Setting #17 allows you to set a longer interval.
If you erased the card in the computer, the camera doesn't recognize what you did and only shows the remaining space. To regain the full use of the card, you need to format the card in the camera.
The D60 does not have a Live View capability. The monitor is used for shooting info, menus, and image reviews. It cannot be used to display the image while shooting. You must use the viewfinder for that, unless you connect the camera to a computer using the Camera Control Pro software from Nikon.
In your manual you will find how to change the display format (picture only, histogram, etc.). The time it's taking to display your image "might" be that your memory card is getting quite full and you're shooting large images. I shoot a D80 and it uses an SD card. Make sure you but a fast memory card if your camera does not buffer the inage before writing it to your memory card.
Thats OK- the processor has to collect the image
process it and then write it to memory.
How long this takes various from camera to camera depend in the the Magapixel size- the ASA setting and other factors.
