I have a 17 hp kohler that is dumping gas out the muffler when I start it, what could be causing the problem? It runs fine without dumping gas once it is running.

Remove fuel line at carb. Remove filter, Drain out all old gas from tank. Let all of the fuel run into container if you see trash and water spray carb. Cleaner into tank until all trash and water are no longer seen. Blow out with compressed air if possible.Put all lines back. Remove bowl from carb. Check the bolt you removed from bowl should have a vertical and horizontal orifice through the bolt, make sure it is clean, remove all trash water etc. From bowl making sure the bowl gasket is in place and not pinched. Hopefully it will now start if not probably carb. Overhaul next.
If you have a float style carb I believe the float has become a "sinker". Pull the float bowl off the carb and set aside. pull the float pin and also set aside. carefully remove float and needle, set needle aside. Shake the float near your ear. If you hear sloshing in the float, replace it. No? check needle and seat for wear, or since you're into the carb this far replace them. This info is based on Tecumseh carbs, but B&S or Kohler should be similar. If there are any other questions don't be afraid to ask. There is no such thing as a stupid question.
muffler full of carbon remove muffler heat up red hot throw in bucket of cold water remove and throw as hard as you can on pavement clean carbon out of exhaust part of headt make sure piston is all the way up you dont want carbon in your motor reinstall thank me
I guess this is the twin cylinder Courage engine, the symptoms you are talking about leads me to believe it is only running on one cylinder, this is why it has no power, and it is dumping fuel from the cylinder that is not running into the silencer which is then burns and increases the silencer tempreture. There are many reasons why it is only running on one cylinder, carboned spark plug, faulty ignition unit, burnt valves, bad pition, worn bore, i think your best line of approach is to fit new plugs, new air filter, check the fuel flow from the fuel pump situated somwhere on the engine, if that all fails get the local dealer to do a leak down test on the engine, this will give you a good idea of what the engine condition is like.
Good luck.
Probably a leaking float valve. If it has a fuel shut off, use it, and run it out of gas after each use. If you pull the bowl off the carb, it's the valve attached to the float. cleaning it may help, or replace it.
I recommend that you go to any auto parts store and get an aerosol can of starting fluid. Shoot a couple of quick bursts into the air intake area and pull it. Repeat until it starts.
If you can have a second person operate the aerosol can for you it will go easier. Let it run on the starter fluid for a few seconds until the glaze in your carbeurator is cleared out.
In the future after you empty the gas out of your chain saw start it up and run it until it completely runs out of fuel.
Check the muffler, if the muffler is clogged it could cause overheating of the engine, and could keep the engine from getting the necessary fuel-gas mixture.
Check your spark first,if you do not have spark your problem is the coils-if you do have spark the problem probaly lies withone of your valves getting stuck after getting hot and soonas it cools down a little it closes and then you can restart it till it gets hot again.Hope this helps
