My rio carbon does nothing when turned on it says upgrader i just got my mp3 from my mom. when she had it she was on a plane and it just turned off, and she couldnt get it to turn back on. well now i have it and i got it to turn on sorta, but when i turn it on, it says either upgrader, or Rio. What do i do?? i dont know how to fix it.
Stuck in upgrader mode. Try resetting by inserting a small #1 paperclip in the player. Otherwise, go to the Rio website at realnetworks and download the firmware upgrade.

my rio carbon had the same problem and displayed upgrader all the time if it helps what i did was i cf modded my rio carbon look on google and see if your rio chiba can be cf modded and if that works that would be pretty cool and remember if you have any tech problems or mp3 problems google it and google usually will have an answer have a good day
maybe your problem is the microdrive that Rio Carbon have... mine also have the same problem and now is still seraching for cf card exchange for the microdrive
The same thing happened to mine. The only thing I could do was to restart the device using the pin-sized button on the top. After I did this it worked fine, and it didnt even erase any of the material on the player.
Perform a firmware upgrade as instructed on the rio website - it will wipe everything clean. Make sure the player is fully charged or this upgrade will kill the player.
Hi Linda,
Your Rio Carbon is telling you that something is messed with its firmware and it can be resolved with an upgrade.
You have to determine the exact model of your unit and download the firmware from http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/support/rio/.
Again you must choose the exact model. There are two ways of updating firmware updater or internet updater. complete instructions are also available. further you would need to connect your Rio to a PC to perform the upgrade.
Good luck and pls post back should you need further information.
Kind regards.
Everybody says that this does not work but it definitely does!
My
Rio got dropped and I completely buggered the hard drive so after
reading many forums saying that it didn't work I read one that said
that someone had told them that sandisk ultra II ones worked (very
vague!)
Because I had nothing to lose I went out and bought a
1GB sandisk Ultra II CF card. I then took apart my rio and replaced the
hard drive with the CF card. Still not thinking it was going to work I
plugged it into my computer and installed the latest firmware (from the
rio website) and then HEY PRESTO!!!!!! it works.
I have yet to try an 8GB ultra II card but when I do i will keep you posted.
If you don't believe me then I don't blame you but If you send me a request then I can send you pictures and more details...
I apologize this isn't a solution but I wanted to let you know that I dropped my Rio Carbon player this morning at the gym and now mine won't do anythin either. I reset the player and then I received a display message of 'upgrader." Per the websites instructions i tried to install the most recent 'firmware' and it still does nothing. When it restarts itself it goes right back to displaying 'upgrader' I installed the firmware software a few times per the instructions and still nothing has happened :( I am sad and frustrated at the same time--mine was maybe used a dozen times. I hope we get some feedback to our problem--and again I apologize I didn't post the solution.
