Nikon d40 18-55mm lens will not auto focus. Switch on lens is on autofocus not manual and shutter button will not depress. Worked over the summer and our 55-200mm lens works fine so it's definitely not the camera. Any repair suggestions? Tried cleaning and still does not autofocus.

What do you mean by "the shutter button won't depress." It physically won't move, or when you push it, it goes down but does not take a picture? The lens may be damaged (not hard to do) or the contacts may still be dirty. It may not be seated all the way. Does the lens release click when you mount the lens onto the camera? Is it a standard or VR lens and is/are the switches fully in one position or the other.

Autofocus problem

Does this problem still exist when you have the shutter pressed halfway down?

My Nikon D200 digital camera will not focus when I depress the shutter butteon half way and will not take picture when shutter is completely depressed. this all started after I downloaded my pictures to my...

Hard to pinpoint the exact problem...
What lens do you have attached? Does it have a switch for M/A and M (auto focus/manual focus)? If it does ensure the switch is in the M/A or Auto Focus position.

On the left side of the camera on the face there are 3 positions, C, S, and M. Ensure it is not on "M" for manual.

Do you have your camera setup to only allow the shutter to operate when it is in focus?

I have a nikon d-40 is there a seeting on it that well let the cameras lens focus when you push the button half way down. I took picture but I had to manual focus I don't know if it the lens or this camera...

Any of the autofocus settings will attempt to focus when the shutter is pressed halfway. What lens are you using? If it doesn't have an internal focus meter, then the D40 won't autofocus with it no matter what. If it does have an internal motor, then check to make sure the lens is set on autofocus.

Check Custom Setting 12. If it's set on AF-On then the shutter button won't focus.

If this doesn't fix it, specify the lens and any other details.

Automatic focus not working

The D40x only autofocuses with the latest AF-S (and old professional AF-I) lenses. Most traditional (screw-type) AF lenses from 1986 through today will not autofocus on the D40x. If your lens says "AF-S," you're fine.
Most lenses sold today for the D40x are AF-S, and so is the included 18-55mm kit lens. Many non-Nikon lenses from Tamron, Tokina, Quantaray, Sigma and anyone other than Nikon still won't autofocus on the D40x. Try before you buy, but honestly, there isn't much the included 18-55mm lens won't do.
Autofocus systems are fast, but not usually instantaneous. You have to hold the shutter down halfway as you compose the first shot so the AF system can focus and lock, and then the camera fires instantaneously when you press the shutter the rest of the way. See Preventing Shutter Delay for more.

Nikon D300 When I depress the shutter half way or fully on my D300 the frame counter reads r27 and the lens (any previously compatible Nikkor lens) will not auto focus. The camera is not set in burst mode...

Only reason the lens will not auto focus when you depress the shutter half way is due to either lens AF switch is set to Manual OR camera body's focus system is on M. There is 3 way toggle switch below the synch port around the lens mount. It should be set to C or S in order for auto focus to work. If all the settings are correct and even "AF-ON", next to rear dial doesn't activate auto focus then the issue maybe in the setting or the body itself. As for the buffer reading r27, I think mine displays r## regardless of burst/continuous mode.

No autofocus

We tried the same lens on another Nikon (D90) and auto focus did not work.
We mounted a new set of lens on the original D40x, and it worked.
Turns out the 2 year Nikon lens (18mm-135mm) was bad. Nikon lens have a 5 year warrantee. The lens will be sent back to Nikon with no service or shipping charge.

Thanks,
K

Nikon d40 autofocus

Look on the left side of the lens. Make sure the button is on A for auto focus and not M for manual. OR not stuck in the middle. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

Nikon d40 autofocus

This happened to me once on a D70... When mounting the lens, make sure it clicks in all the way when turning counterclockwise. Also it may be worthy to note that both the lens AND the camera must be set to autofocus mode ("A" switch set on both lens and cam).

Will not auto focus

"... Autofocus Lock ("AF-L"). Pressing the AF-L (Autofocus Lock) button enables the Nikon F4 to lock the focus. Simultaneous lock of AF-L and AE-L is possible. "'FREEZE FOCUS" - is another great function in the F4. It allows automatic shutter release when subject enters a pre focused distance - available with Nikon MF-23 and/or the 250 exp. MF-24 Multi-Control Back. i.e. with the shutter button fully depressed, the shutter is automatically fired when a subject comes into a preset manually focused position. This function is recommended for sports races because the racing course is usually known beforehand. It also works well in wildlife remote control photography, scientific, forensic and other technical photography. ..."
