Check the house electrical panel dryer circuit breaker pair--push off, then on. Try the dryer again. If still nothing, measure the voltage across the two slanted slots in the dryer power socket. It should measure: ~230 volts AC. If at or near zero, either one of the breaker pair is defective, or a wire is open from the breaker to the socket. If you read ~230 volts, then the problem is within the dryer--motor runs, but drum doesn't turn (broken belt), or motor doesn't run (bad controller, motor, door switch, start switch. Does the unit get hot? Need more help on your end.

My dryer just stopped in mid cycle. There was an electrical burn smell. Is my motor bad?

  • Anonymous Oct 23, 2010

There is insufficient information to tell. Electrical smells tend to linger, so do some sleuthing around the machine to see if you can localize the smell. The motor should be accessible from a rear panel in the lower cabinet. (Pull the power plug before getting into the cabinet). Check the motor shaft to see if it will turn. Check the control area on top of the cabinet. Look for burned wiring or other obvious damage. This is one problem that may require professional help. Good luck!

Whirlpool gas dryer motor wont turn over

If the drum is not turning, then the belt may have broken and could be (because of the noise I think your describing, partially wrapped around the motor pulley.

Modern gas dryers do not have standing pilot lights. They are electronic ignition.

Chances are, you solve the belt problem, you'll solve the (I guess your having) heat problem.

Please respond with more detail of the problems you are having, and advise if the belt is broken.
