I am unable to sign in to yahoo messenger but i can sign in to other yahoo functions like mail and webmessenger. the only problem is, is with the messenger. I have tried using a different yahoo id but i cant sign in to the messenger but works fine on yahoo mail and others. help. need it badly.. when i sign in, the message shows "there was a problem signing in to yahoo! messenger. please try again a little bit later.i have also changed the connection setting on messenger itself. have tried disabling my computer's firewall and anti-virus, still nothing. i have also tried to uninstall and reinstall to a different version of yahoo messenger and i get a different error message. "Yahoo! Messenger is unable to download files needed for installation. Please check firewall settings and retry installation." again, I have disabled my firewall and the anti-virus with this. Still nothing.. I am a bit frustrated about this since I think I have tried everything to fix this. I don't want to format it yet. please help.... thanks..

Ttry adjusting the Yahoo! Messenger Connection Preferences. Here's how:

1. Click the "Messenger" menu and select "Connection Preferences."
2. Select "Firewall with no proxies."
3. Click "Apply." You should see a message asking you to sign in again.
4. Click "OK."
5. Enter your Yahoo! ID and password, then click "Sign In."

If you are still unable to sign in, see if you can sign in using one of the following links:

1. Using Internet Explorer on your computer, can you successfully sign in to any or all of the following websites?
   http://login.yahoo.com
   http://mail.yahoo.com
   http://webmessenger.yahoo.com/
   

Try creating a new account, or try the forgot password link.

Verify that the same Yahoo! ID and password you used before in the last step also works in the online version of Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger for the Web:

enter the same Yahoo! ID and password you were using before.
> Step 5: Check Connection Settings
Click the Messenger menu and select Connection Preferences.
Click Connect directly to the Internet, and then click OK.

Check by Changing the connection type to a connection via a proxy server:
Click the Messenger menu and select Connection Preferences.
Click Connect via a proxy server, then under this option, select HTTP proxy, and then click OK.


Last is Uninstall all the Yahoo Tool Bars and Yahoo applications , Yahoo Messenger, and Yahoo Updates from Program list i.e Control panel - Add/Rem Programs ..
And reinstall the Yahoo Messenger again -

Since Messenger Version 9 was launched, Yahoo has prevented us from having 2 Instant Messaging capable programs open and active at the same time.
For example, Yahoo Messenger, Yahoo Webmessenger, Yahoo Mail, your mobile phone, Ipod, or other computers etc. etc.
Yahoo classifies all these programs as "Different devices or locations". Navigating from one to the other will close one program and you may get the notification message referred to above..
Note. Hitting the X on the Contacts page in Yahoo Messenger does not sign you out of Yahoo Messenger, it merely closes the contacts page. Like WLM you have to close the program by right-clicking the icon in the system tray and selecting 'Exit'
You can have Yahoo Mail and Messenger ( or any other program ) open at the same time as long as your status is "Offline" in Yahoo Mail. Use the drop-box next to your name and "Sign out of chat"
Your online contacts will vacate the inbox until you make yourself "Available" again

A) A glitch.
B) You are signed in somewhere else.

Try it again. Also, if someone else is signed in to your account, you can boot them out by signing in yourself.

I'd change the password.

You can only have one yahoo "Instant message capable" program open at one time. So if you move from Messenger to mail or chat you will get this message. If you want to have Yahoo Mail open with another Yahoo IM program you will have to set your status to "offline" in MAIL by using the dropbox next to your name ( all new mail) select "sign out of chat"
In Classic mail its located in the Inbox. Your online chat contacts will vacate the inbox until you make yourself "Available" again.
Yahoo classifies - Messenger - Mail - webmessenger - my yahoo - mobile phones - computers etc etc as different computers or devices - hence the confusion.
