New upright kenmore freezer temp varies +/- 10 degrees

New upright Kenmore freezer 5 cu ft.. Plugged it in, empty, to see if it would maintain a zero degree temperature. Noticed temp varies -10 to + 10. Is the freezer broken or is this due to the fact its empty?

Over what period of time did this variation occur?

The freezer should have an automatic defrost cycle. The temperature will rise while it is going through this cycle.

What should the tempurture control on a 13.7 cu. ft. Kenmore upright , model 253 214 21101 freezer be set at when 3/4 to full be set at?

you will have to play with the adjustment until you get into its range. the load has alot to do with the box temp. I suggest getting a thermometer and try setting the temp to @20-25 degrees and see if that helps

In OF mode-wont come on - is new

I have a similar freezer under the Kenmore brand and experienced the same problem. Try raising the temp setting to +10 degrees. Unit should then start up again.

Freezer outside walls are very hot. Not maintaining temp

Hi, The walls are getting hot because that is where the condesor coils are. The condensor coils are where the heat is disperst that is trap as the coolant pumps through the evaporator coils inside. The fact that it is holding 0 degrees is a good sign. Is this freezer in a garage?
Check the door seals to make sure no heat is getting into the freezer other then when the door is opened.
I hope this helps you. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Freezer temp

either stat is bad or charge is low. bypassing stat will achieve desires temp. if not then charge is low. if charge is low then buy new. if compressor valves are bad then buy new. to expensive to fix these days. new is cheaper. good luck. stat is power lead in , power lead out. kill power then tie em together to get constant on. be sure yor thermometor is good. i just spent 20000 dollars fixing ref at a hospital, only to find there thermometors were bad! good luck.

Freezer runs constantly

not necessarily, is it maintaining temp? all food staying frozen? especially ice creams if stored in there. most newer freezers displace the heat generated while cooling the food through copper lines running through sides of unit, helps to cut down on air temp differences between the inside (0 degrees) and outside temp to prevent moisture and possible condensation causing premature rusting of unit
