I ordered parts to rebuild the door mounted ice dispenser. How do you remove the dispenser front surround from the door. Does it snap straight out, slide up or down or sideways and then release for pull out? I am afraid of breaking the cover which contains the on/off for light and buttons for crushed or cubed ice, and it doesn't appear to be available easily.
Hey,
It's pretty easy to remove by yourself. DO NOT force it or it will probably break. Nice and easy will do it. You'll need a flat headed screw-driver and a towel.
-There are 4 retaining tabs. 2 on top and 2 on the bottom.
-Remove the drip tray in the dispenser area
-Start with the bottom. Before starting, look underneath the surround (yes--bend down, stoop or lie on the floor -- your preference) You will see 2 thin slots. That's exactly where the tabs are. Do one tab at a time.
-Place the folded towel under the surround at the same time you are placing the screwdriver tip gently at the slot---DON'T apply pressure to the screw-driver yet.
(The towel will protect the paint and by being folded will provide a slight leverage for the screwdriver) Hold the towel against the door with the same hand you're holding the screw-driver with. If you can't....then cry for help.
-With your free hand press down firmly on the lower part of the surround (where you removed drip tray from) ...at the same time GENTLY pry with the screw-driver.
It shout pop out pretty easily.
-Repeat for the other bottom tab.
-For the top tabs, lift the entire surround up and then out.
-Remove the wiring harness and VOILA!!!
-Show off to your wife.
Billtdent2, perfect! Clear and concise. One of the bext set of instructions I have seen.

The front surround is affixed to the front of the door by way of four tabs, two at the top and two at the bottom. It took four hands to get it off. Basically, working at the bottom of the surround, you need to push downward on the bottom edge of the surround to cause the tabs to drop far enough below their slots so that the other two hands you have helping you can pry the tabs out of their respective slots at the bottom. Once they snap loose, you can lift the surround upwards and off of the door. In the end, I had to reach a point where if it broke, it broke, but it did snap free in the end without breaking, but it was pretty close.

Richard

Yes, I also wish to remove the plastic front ot the ice/water dispense area so I can clean up in there. After a few years it gets mildewy and just plain gross. It dosen't seem to pop out easily and appears to be held in by something strong.
I too would like to know how to remove front surround from ice/water dispenser, to get to the parts inside...water dispenser switch quit... tks
