When disc is loaded, "Loading" is displayed on monitor and disc spins for about a minute. Disc stops spinning and "STOP"...then "ERROR" is displayed on DVD display. Message then displayed: "This Disc cannot be played...Check Disc." Tried another good known disc with same results.
Also cleaned laser lens. Unit is about 3 years old, and developed this problem randomly.
I'm afraid you are dealing with a weakened Laser on the unit. The cost vs. benefit ratio of fixing this unit is not worthwhile.
You will find that there are newer versions of this device on the market less expensive than what you paid for the unit you have now.

Me too! I have had trouble with the last two DVDs I tried to play. Both were brand new. It's a shame since I haven't even used the unit all that frequently.
Wow - seams like we all got the same problem at the same time.
DVD player plays all the other formats except for the DVD.
After putting in the DVD I see loading... on the TV screen and the it give error, this DVD cannot be played, Please check disc.
Does anyone has any solution to this problem.
VCR works but the DVD doesn't. It worked 2 yrs. ago when my granddaughter visited us and we played 2 DVD cartoons. After that.....it didn't work anymore. We brought in a knowledgeable person this year (July/08) to check it out (the wiring, the set-up, etc.) and the DVD would not play the different discs. We are VERY DISAPPOINTED in Sony for making this lemon and we are the ones that are "out of pocket".
I got the same problem about Jan 2008, error and doesn't recognize the DVD. Amazing what a lemon Sony made and their not willing to do anything about it to satisfy the customer.
