I have the 8gig Archos 70, the whole thing froze as described in other posts. The solution is not for the feint of heart though. Mine would do absolutely nothing. So what the heck, I opened it up (nothing to lose at this point). Messed about a bit. Read that when it "Bricks" like this there is nothing that can be done. If it is Bricked, something locks it in the memory and function. As long as the battery is connected, it will remain that way no matter what.
Solution. Cut the black power wire from the battery (there are three long wires red white and black), leave for 20 minute, and solder the wire back together and heat shrink the joint. Reassemble, plug in power cord and it should reboot...
My archos is about 3-4 years old, and is mounted to the wall in my kitchen for use as an internet radio
You will need to puchase a new battery. I bought mine from 'newmp3 technology.com' over the internet about 9 months ago and the battery is as good today as it was when I bought it Take care that you choose the right battery the size the 4Gb and 30Gb Archos 605 is thinner than the other variants New mp3.. has both sizes for about £20 (GBP). Note the changing the battery will void its warranty but if you are outside the warranty period you loose nothing by trying this.
Now to change it:- Turn the Archos onto its screen. Locate the leg stand at one end. Parallel to this stand there is a narrow strip with two cross heads, one at each end. Remove these screws and lift the narrow strip out. You will be able to slip the large matt aluminium back panel about 3mm towards the leg stand and then the panel will lift free. Locate the battery and cut the wires close to the battery. Strip about 8mm of the insulation of the tails left on the Archos and on the wire tails on the new battery. If you have soldering iron, great but if not twist the exposed wires tightly, red to red and white to white. Wrap the joints in insulation tape or Sellotape tape (sticky face to sticky face folded over the joint works really well). Fold the wires back along the top edge and insert the battery. If the battery appears that it may be loose when fitted put a 5cm square of folded kitchen towel at the back of it to provide some soft, space-filling packing. Refit the back plate and and strip with the two screws. You will need to charge the battery for about 4 hours. Do not be surprised to find some of your previous Archos glitches have gone; disconnecting the battery causes a full reset of the system but all the files are still there. Good luck
I had the exact same problem, I looked a bit on the net and I found the answer. What you have to do is push the reset button when your archos isn't plugged on. The reset button is located behind the battery ( you'll have to the remove the battery ) near the pins that connects the archos to its battery. It looks like a gold circle and if you push it you'll see it's a button. After pushing the reset button try to put the battery on back again and replug your archos, it should work normally now. Good luck !
Hi, my Archos 605 160GB is doing the same, Sorry to say the battery has gone. 2 options 1. Back to Archos 2. Replace the battery yourself I ordered mine from HK from the web site BatteryUpgrade. co. uk for about £24 - If you search on Utube there is a video showing you how to change the battery on smaller 605's
go to archos firmware and download version 2.1.04 to your pc or laptop and save it in a folder then get ur mp4 turn it on and go format you will get a screen that says done leave it on that and connect to your pc or laptop it will recognise your mp4 then go in my computer and open 405 and open your save file and drag the save file into the 405 but NOT into a folder below them and after it has\copied turn the 405 off and start it up should be as good as new
sound like you may need a new battery. look on the archos FAQ page to see if that is what it is. if so you can do this two ways you can fit the battery your self, you can buy the battery from newmp3technology.com or type archos.co.uk. or you can send it to the archos repair by calling 0870 609 1693 this will put you to the archos uk repair team
Are you sure the battery is charged? If so, try detach and retach the battery. Also try to attach to your computer via the usb cable and the 604 should turn on by itself, if nothing happens you need to send back to Archos for repair.
The solution is found! There's no need to format your HDD So. - Unplug the battery; - Press and hold the reset button for 20-25 sec; - Put the battery back to it's place; - Charge your device (when you plug the cable in, it turns on (note that a blinking lightning icon appears on the charging indicator), then it turns off with it's "shutting down" message, dont pay attention on this, just let it charge for about 10-15 minutes (note that the CHG bulb won't be lit)); - Turn on your device. The CHG bulb is lit, Archos doesn't shut down - Enjoy
