Hello. Your Kitchenaid unit has the child-lock enabled. Look for a button(or set of buttons) that has a small lock symbol beneath or the word "lock". On most models, you have to push and hold the button(s) until the lock light goes out(usually about 3-5 seconds). That should disable the lock and the unit should operate normally. I hope this helps you!
I went out on a service call for this dishwasher yesterday. The complaint was
that the door latch was broken and the child lock light was lit. I temporarily
rigged the latch to work until the replacement part came in but that left me
with the problem of the child lock still engaged. The mini-manual for this dishwasher is located behind the kick
plate. The mini-manual revealed that the child lock (called a control
lock in the manual) can be disengaged by pressing and holding the air dry
button for four seconds. So now the customer can run the dishwasher with the
rigged door latch until I can properly repair it later this week. Hope this works
Locate the "Energy Saver/Dry" button on the dishwasher. The location of this button will be different depending upon the specific model number of the dishwasher, but should be easy to spot. If you have trouble finding it, you can check the diagram in the manual of your dishwasher for the exact location for your specific model.
Press and hold down this "Energy Saver/Dry" button for at least four seconds. Make sure that you do not release the button until at least 4 seconds have passed, otherwise the lock will not become disabled.
Check to make sure that the child lock indicator light has turned off. If this light is no longer on, this means you were successful at turning off the child lock. If the light is still on, repeat the process, but try to press and hold the "Energy Saver/Dry" button for a few seconds longer. If it still doesn't work, there may be a more complicated issue with your dishwasher. Consult your manual, or call to the manufacturer or repair man to determine if there is another problem with your dishwasher.

Check the manual and see how to disengage the child safety button. If you have already tried that and it has not worked, then you need a new Electronic control assembly. You did not give the model number for your dishwasher but they run from $86 to $146, depending on your model. This is an easy repair and can be done by anyone who is moderately handy. Remember to turn off the power to the dishwasher by removing the fuse or turning off the breaker before attempting any repair.
Without knowing the manufacturer and model number, it is impossible to be specific. But most dishwashers that have a control lock light means that you have a child safety feature on the dishwasher. If you look closely, you may see some symbol that ties two buttons together and maybe if you press both at the same time, the child lock out may turn off.
Post info about the make and model here to get more specific.
