It may just be a wire rubbing the tub and the insulation is gone. smoke means something is not right. the drive motor will smoke if the windings overheat neccesitating a new motor. - the start or run capacitor for the motor may be bad.

  • Anonymous Dec 27, 2007

remove the top or back of the unit and look carefully at all the wiring. look at the motor winding. it should look a bright copper color. the windings are coated with a clear enamel. if the winding looks anything but a bright copper color, say, a brown or green color I'd say the motor is shot. new ones are about $135 to replace. your call new one or repair it.

yeah, washer has its own motor.

Samsung front loading washer started smoking while on spin cycle , new rubber seal an bearing ?

my first though would be to consider if its electrical smoke of friction smoke, chances are if it smokes on spin the motor is over heating and ready to pack in its operation, new brushes may solve the problem before buying a complete new motor.

My haier washing machine was making clanking noises when spinning then smoke came out of top of machine and error 7 came up. What does this mean?

Hi Christina

Unfortunately, letting the smoke out of any appliance is never a good thing and is almost always terminal. I think your only option would be to cart it to an appliance repair tech. for the post mortem and estimate on repairs.

Sorry

Lg tromm front load washer smells like burning and going to catch fire?

Unplug the washing machine from your electrical plug immediately, and do not run the washer at all. The longer you run the machine with smoke coming out of it, the more expensive will be the repairs. Not only that, but, you could have smoke damage, and cause yourself health problems by breathing in the toxic smoke. Your question can only be answered by physically inspecting the machine. Please have it serviced by a qualified service technician.

My washing machine trips the electric

take out the plug
remove the motor
now clean it ??
check the brushes or replace them if worn
or if you do not do this a new motor will be needed
as the motor safety switch will get blown

Smoke coming from inside drum after spin cycle

The noise would possibly indicate that your drum bearings are on their way out, this would more than likely mean a new spider assembly, tripod in shape and houses the bearings through the drum, as well. They come in kits or bearing assembly alone for various prices, usually around 40 pounds for the kit but it would be a very difficult job if you are not familiar with this type of work, bearing extractor kits are best used but more cost, drum seals may also be needed.

Shorting out when you turn the dial on front ,was making funny noise the other day too

Please post a model number. What do you mean by 'shorting out'? Was there a pop, or spark, smoke, or burning smell? What was the funny noise? A hum, a clanking, a squeal? And what area of the machine did it come from? Does the machine agitate, spin, or fill? Thanks.

Yeah I have a small whirpool washing machine. I stuffed it with too many clothes & it overloaded therefore causing it to smoke... So I unplugged it before it had a chance to really heat up! So the next...

Hi,

Overloading the machine puts extra strain on the motor and the smoke you saw was most likely coming from the motor. As you unplugged it and it ran normally the next time, you may have avoided doing any damage - or at least serious damage - to the motor.

You should be able to continue using the machine with no problem, but don't be too surprised if your motor quits in future. If you are using the machine again and you notice smoke - whether you've overloaded the machine or not - switch it off and have it replaced or at least inspected.

Regards,
BElectric.

The washine machine finished it's cycle but there was smoke coming out of the drum and a burning rubber smell

The usual cause of smoke coming out of drum is that the heater element has come on or stayed on with no water in the drum
Try it on a spin cycle only, if smoke still comes out of drum, then could be a faulty pump, or main motor is burning.

Washer smokes half way through wash cycle Technician checked scree and replaced water regulator/pump but still smokes

Hi,
Call your technician again. You paid him to fix the problem - which he clearly has not.
This is potentially a fire risk.

If it is a few days before technician will arrive, it is possible to identify where the smoke is coming from yourself.
If you are used to electrical repairs, it is possible to remove the cover and run the machine with the cover off to observe components. Obviously this is a potentially dangerous situation, so do not touch the machine at all in this condition to avoid electrocution - nor touch anything for 10 minutes after unplugging, as voltages can be stored and still be lethal.

It could be a component on the control board, a loose connection, a partially broken wire, loose belt tensioner, motor capacitor, motor brushes, loose belt, rubbing component.
Spotting it smoking will certainly help identify it!
