Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner quit working

Hi -

Our Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner quit working. I had trouble early on with getting good battery connection because of the anti-corrosive grease they used on the battery contacts, but that shouldn't be the problem now. It beeps for its allotted 15 seconds but then nothing. Before I tear it apart I was wondering if anyone had experience with it.

Thanks for your attention!

I had my old shower cleaner (one button) konk out on me after 2 years (SCJohson gives it a life span of 3). They sent me a coupon for a free new one (2 buttons). Unit worked when I first tested it without the cleaner in. Put bottle in and sprayer turned only once around, then never turned again. I brought brand new unit back to store, got another, which does exactly the same thing - works upside down, but as soon as you hang it up with bottle, sprayer only turns once around and then doesn't work again. I'm thinking the weight of the bottle is shifting something and preventing the unit from working. Bad design. With this many complaints, SC Johnson needs to recall this product and stop giving out coupons for a product that doesn't work.

Had the exact same problem, customer service at the 800 number was fast, courteous, & easy! Almost shocked with how responsive SCJ was.

Called the 800 number and they agreed to replace the unit immediately. Great response from SCJ.

Fantastic customer service! Sending me coupons to replace the unit and refill.

Went through 4 units in 2 weeks - CRAZY! Though I would check on line to see if anyone else was having the same problem. Found several strings with the same complaint. So I called the customer service line, did some troubleshooting over the phone to no avail. Fortunately for the last two units I was able to provide the lot numbers - critical to isolating and resolving the problem. Customer service was fantastic and grateful to get the lot numbers. Refund and coupon for new unit are on the way. :-)

This is at least the second scrubbing bubbles shower cleaner I've had that has stopped working. I cleaned the battery contacts, tried new batteries, but it doesn't work. It makes the noise, but nothing happens!

The sprayer is NO LONGER MADE BY Johnson so you will have to fix the one (s) you have. The small plastic gears inside the sprayer wear with age and can get slightly “out of adjustment" and “bind up”, preventing the sprayer from running normally. Take out the 6 screws (they are very small on the bottom of the sprayer - TAKE YOUR TIME, it is an arduous task as some are deeply inside the plastic case). These are very small Torx Head screws that need the special Torx screw driver. When all 6 screws are removed (and carefully set aside), open the case and find the SMALLEST plastic gear (THE SMALLEST, its important) and use a small tool to reach in and turn the small gear a few times to "loosen" the train of gears. If necessary, repeat turning the small gear until the gears turn freely. If you do it right, the motor WILL then be able to turn the mechanism (TEST IT by pushing one of "go buttons - you should hear the beeping tone first, then it should run as normal). Then, take a very small tool (or tooth pick) and carefully use it to apply a little bit of Vaseline Petroleum Jelly onto the gears (place it on each of the gear surfaces where they mesh together). Repeat applying the Vaseline Petroleum Jelly until the gears are liberally coated on their “meshing” surfaces). When you have it running normally, reassemble the case and replace the 6 Torx screws – take your time, it is NOT easy. Remember these are plastic gears (cheap but NOT ideal) and they will wear, so the sprayer had a finite life expectancy (Thanks Johnston! :-( ). You are welcome.

I just experienced the same problem for the third time. Call J&J Customer Care 1-800-558-5252. Select option 3.

Explain your problem and they will send you a coupon for a new Scrubbing Bubbles Starter Kit with a full bottle of solution in 7 to 10 business days. I would not waste my time to take the old apart, just call and get a NEW ONE.

Use a t10 star bit screwdriver take all the screws out of the bottom of the unit. Pull it out just enough to see the motor and gears. Spin the smaller gear not the big one you won't move that one. This took some effort to move it. Push the button the it should spin. Just had to break it loose. Took all of 5 min. Works just fine now. You can get the stark screwdriver set at Harbor Freight for 6 bucks.

Yay, it worked! I love all the suggestions of calling and getting a coupon for a free one but I live out in the country so fixing it was a much better and quicker solution for me. Thanks!

  • bralwel May 14, 2011

This worked for me. I called up the 800 number and the coupon for the free one is on it's way. Then I opened it up and moved the small gear. Back in action and a free one to boot!!

  • JuanDon May 15, 2011

It worked for 10 days, then quit again. This fix is temporary.

  • RobertOh1 May 31, 2011

At the recommendation of others here, I called the 800 number and I have a new one on the way in 7 to 10 days. SC Johnson seems to be a company that cares about their customers!

Customer service was great! Went through a short troubleshooting process with a courteous and pleasant rep. At one point, she told me to turn the spray nozzle 1/4 turn to the left and back, but it didn't want to turn. She took my info and said they were sending a coupon for replacement that would arrive in about a week. After hanging up, tried to turn the nozzle again and with a little more pressure it turned and I turned it back, replaced the bottle and pressed the button and it worked! Not sure for how long, but I'll keep the replacement in reserve until this one gives up the ghost for good! Great service though!

Thanks for the tip on the 800 number. I've had two units do the exact same thing. I took one apart and put some light oil on the motor and manually moved the gears a bit, it started working. I then put some silicon around any crack of the case and put it back together. It was looking like moisture was getting into not only the battery compartment but around the motor as well. It's been working ever since (couple months)
I think they really need to seal it better. Maybe a tight rubber seal around the battery holder.

I have had 4 all broke. All replaced free. they replace them because they are so cheap to build and they dupe customers into thinking they re doing that for the customer satisfaction. But think about it!!! The replacement bottles are real expensive for what you get and you have to replace them very often. That is where they are making their Big $$$$ not the cost of the sprayer. Look at the descriptions of the product. Cheap plastic , no sealing at the joints and plastic gears. Probably a very cheap motor that rusts easily. It cost them next to nothing to manufacture.

I will not buy another one as they have had enough feedback to be able to fix any problems but they do not really care if they have to replace them occasionally because they are laughing all the way to the bank with the money they make from the refills!!!

I just called customer service. They said that normally they would replace the unit but the automatic cleaner is now discontinued. This is disappointing because although there are intermittent issues with it I really like that I don't have to manually spray. They are sending me a coupon for a spray cleaner that has a wider nozzle for more coverage though.

Sometimes the gears bind. If you hear beeps, then nothing, try grasping the spin nozzle a give it a light twist left and right a few times. Do not apply enough pressure to break the gears, you simply want to jiggle them loose from binding. Press the button again, and hopefully you have unjammed the gears.

I just had to call as mine stopped working after about 2 1/2 years. Changing the batteries always worked. After checking for corrosion she had me try to turn the nozzle counter clockwise. I didn't feel any movement but when I hit the button it worked! So easy fix. She gave me the tip of putting a little vaseline on the ends of the batteries when changing them to help prevent the corrosion and is sending me a coupon for a refill.

I have never had any other problems with this item and absolutely love it. Has made the difference between a dirty and clean shower stall for me.

Okay this is gross, but for the good of the public, I\'ll divulge.
I noticed that I haven\'t had to change the liquid for a while, even though I could hear the motor and saw it turning through the door. After determining that nothing was coming out, I took off the bottle to see if there was anything blocking, and saw some gray squiggly things suck down the holes. Though I guessed that it could be a mildew/ mold string, there wasn\'t enough pressure to make theses things as active as they were. Also 2/3 of the bottle was left and it smelled like dirty water.
A few googles later...apparently we had a drain worm (drain bug larvae) incubator hanging next to our heads. These guys are nasty and their environment is rife with black mold, which we were going insane with on the shower walls. We threw away the unit, which they were living in, and bleach steamed the shower, including cleaning all nearby drains with drano, to prevent a new home there.
Since the whole point of the exercise is being able to simplify our life, the risk of this happening again will prevent me from getting another one
We live in a humid environment, and have a dehumidifier in the bathroom, which is more than we ever did in more tropical climates. This is the first time I\'ve ever heard of these. Uck

I used a Torx bit and took the first one apart. I got it running for about one week.
I took a chance and bought another one, thinking the first might have just been faulty. Bad decision, the new one quit after 3 weeks. I put new batteries in and it beeped 3 times and never started.
Bad design.

It sounds like your pool cleaners connection to is lose or cracked at some point. If bubbles are entering at the return line, check the connection and make sure it is tight. Look for cracks in the hose also. Finally, check the gasket in the pump basket for damage or wear. When you find the source of the leak, you can fix it and the cleaner should continue running normally.

I've found that the batteries lose contact after w while, so here is what I do:
1) take a pencil eraser and rub each of the contacts with it.
2) lightly apply some petroleum jelly to each end of the battery.
3) make sure the compartment is completely dry. Take a small piece of paper towel, roll it up, and, with the pencil, rub the inside of each of the battery compartments.
4) re-insert batteries and try again. It should work!
